We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Lisa Cortrez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Lisa, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
You, know I’m known for helping people change their mindset in an out of the box non traditionally type of way. So, I actually don’t like using the term work life balance. I replace the word balance with HARMONY. This changes things. I work with people with anxiety, OCD, trauma, and life changes. So I always try to think outside the box. Balance almost sounds like ANOTHER task to juggle in life. When we change that to harmony. It sounds so much better. The feeling that words brings along is peaceful. Instead of striving for balance, which can often be an unattainable and stressful goal, I teach people how to find harmony in their lives. So, I like asking, What will bring harmony to your life? What is your life missing. What am I doing too much of or too little of.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
As a therapist, I have dedicated my life to helping others. But what sets me apart from other therapists? For starters I am deeply committed to my clients, I might be known as The Anxiety Dr, an expert in anxiety, but I never stop learning. I provide excellent Mental Health Services to all of my clients. I give back to my community, always volunteering my time to educate the importance of Mental Health. I am dedicated to normalizing mental health and not just spreading awareness. While spreading awareness is important, it’s not enough. We shouldn’t have to wait until stress and anxiety is causing problems in our life, to start implementing mental health strategies. My mission is to teach people to implement mental wellness strategies now.

My brand is centered around this idea to normalizing mental wellness. I strive to create a safe, welcoming space where clients can feel comfortable discussing their struggles and working towards their goals. I am here to remind everyone that mental health is a vital part of overall wellness.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’ve been exploring Houston, creating vlogs about taking on new adventures to encourage my clients to do the same. I have enjoyed discovery green, the spa at The Post Oak Hotel, walking down 19th St in the Heights. But I am a foodie I enjoy eating at Local Foods, The Honey Hole, Coltivare, The Post Beer and Wine Garden, and drinking coffee at Amsterdam Company. I also love pastries some of my favorite spots are Bouchée Patisserie, Fluff Bar, El Bolillo, and Common Bond. Houston is one of the best cities in the U.S. I truly enjoy living here, and I have so much more to explore. I’ve only lived here 2 years. I’m excited to explore the surrounding cities as well.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am so grateful for having an amazing family, great parents, a great husband and wonderful children. But I have to give thanks to all the incredible clients I have had. As a therapist, I have had the opportunity to work with incredible humans over these past 23 years. Today, I want to take a moment to give a shout-out to all of my clients who have helped me grow and learn as a therapist. Without them, I wouldn’t be the success I am today.

Each of my clients have brought something unique to our sessions, and I am grateful for the privilege of getting to know them and their story and to help them on their journey. I have learned so much from the brave individuals who have entrusted me with their stories, struggles and triumphs. I mean how lucky am I to be able to have the trust of these individuals to share their stories with me.

Through my clients, I have learned about the resilience of the human spirit, the importance of empathy and compassion and the power of vulnerability. They have taught me about the complexity of anxiety and the impact that it can have on every aspect of our lives. This keeps me going, wanting to help more people. I do this through my podcast.

So, today yes I want to thank each and every one of my clients for their trust, openness, and their willingness to explore difficult emotions and experiences with me. It is because of them that I am able to continue to do the work that I love every day. And it’s because of them that I continue to learn.

I look forward to continue to grow and learn alongside my clients as we work towards their mental wellness goals. I want them to know that they have helped me to be a better therapist, better human, and they have had an incredible impact in my life.
