We had the good fortune of connecting with Abdul-Hakeem Adeleye and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Abdul-Hakeem, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Ever since I can remember, I have always had a deep fascination with cameras, especially in the filmmaking world. I still hope to one day graduate from photography to filmmaking. The day I picked up a camera and took a few pictures by myself, it was as if I was exposed to a whole new world. The idea of starting my own photography business began to form when I started receiving requests from friends, acquaintances, and even some local businesses for my photography services. I saw an opportunity to turn my passion into something more substantial while also earning some income to support myself through college.
I did a lot of research about running a small business, especially in the creative field. I learned about marketing, pricing, client communication, and the technical aspects of photography business management. I also reached out to some established photographers for advice and mentorship.
Ultimately, the thought process behind starting my own business was a combination of my love for photography, the demand I was seeing for my work, and the desire to gain valuable real-world experience while pursuing my education. It’s been a challenging yet incredibly rewarding journey so far.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Absolutely, I’d be happy to share more about my art and journey as a photographer.
What Sets Me Apart:
What sets me apart as a photographer is my focus on capturing genuine emotions and moments in a unique and creative way. I believe that photography is not just about capturing images but about telling stories. Whether it’s a portrait session, an event, or a conceptual project, I always strive to convey emotions and narratives through my photographs. I’m particularly proud of my ability to establish a connection with my subjects, putting them at ease and allowing their authentic selves to shine through.
My Professional Journey:
My professional journey has been a mix of excitement, challenges, and growth. Starting my own photography business while in college wasn’t easy. I faced the challenge of balancing academics with client projects and business management. However, every challenge was an opportunity to learn. I focused on building a strong online presence through social media and a professional website. This helped me reach a wider audience and attract clients.
Overcoming Challenges:
I overcame challenges by staying persistent, seeking guidance from mentors, and continuously learning. I embraced failures as learning experiences and adjusted my approach accordingly. Networking within the local creative community also helped me connect with fellow artists and potential clients. While it wasn’t always smooth sailing, the challenges I faced shaped me into a more resilient and adaptable photographer.
Lessons Learned:
One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is the importance of effective communication. Clear communication with clients helps manage expectations and ensures a smoother collaboration. Additionally, understanding the business side of photography, including pricing and contracts, is crucial for sustainable growth.
My Brand and Story:
I want the world to know that my brand is built on authenticity, creativity, and storytelling. I was just speaking with a friend a few days ago and I told her how I wanted the pictures I take to have a certain story to them. I do not just want to take pictures that look nice, I want my pictures to practically be movies (in terms of having a plot). Every photograph I take reflects my passion for capturing moments that tell meaningful stories. My journey showcases the power of pursuing one’s passions and the growth that comes from embracing challenges. I believe in creating a positive impact through my art, connecting with people’s emotions, and contributing to the vibrant creative landscape of Houston.
In a nutshell, my journey hasn’t been without its obstacles, but it’s those very challenges that have propelled me forward. I’m excited about the endless possibilities that lie ahead and the stories I have yet to capture through my lens.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Absolutely, I’d love to give a shoutout to my photography mentor, Evi Greene. His guidance and encouragement has been instrumental in shaping my journey as a photographer and business owner.
Evi Greene not only provided me with a solid foundation in technical aspects of photography but also instilled in me a deep appreciation for the art form. He pushed me to explore various genres and techniques, helping me find my unique style. Their constructive critiques challenged me to improve constantly, and their belief in my potential gave me the confidence to pursue my business.
Additionally, my friends and family have been incredibly supportive. They’ve posed as models, spread the word about my business, and offered emotional encouragement during times of doubt. Their belief in my abilities has been a driving force behind my determination.
Lastly, the local Houston community deserves recognition. The diverse culture and vibrant atmosphere of the city have provided me with endless opportunities for creative expression. Collaborating with fellow photographers, working on local projects, and engaging with clients from different backgrounds have all enriched my growth as a photographer.
So, to Evi Greene, my friends and family, and the Houston community, I dedicate this shoutout. Without their support and belief in me, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
