We had the good fortune of connecting with Sandy Kott and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sandy, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Customer service is one of the most important things in our business – if you don’t have a good customer service you will not have return customers

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
There is nothing easy about running a business especially one that involves retail/service. There are days you may not feel like meeting the public but in a food business you have to put on that happy face and do the best you can or you will lose your existing customers and a good business grows best by word of mouth. The retail/food service business is almost a 24/7 business and it is a hard business. I think it is our community/customers that keep us going – we have been thru some real ups and downs over the past 38 years, but it is our community that keeps us going

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Since Anderson is a very small town it would be hard to make a week itinerary – First you would serve them breakfast at Kott’s Cafe – then maybe walk over to the new winery in town Winking Star Cellar then go visit 57 blooms – these have both just opened in “downtown” Anderson – after that you would have to travel to Navasota and Bryan/College Station

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Our mother Bobbie Kott started the cafe in 1985, she previously owned a cafe at Tamina and I45 several years before that, when the land sold she moved to Needam Road (now 242) where she later sold that cafe and opened up in Anderson, TX … she was one of the hardest workers I have ever known, my sisters Donna and Tina helped mom out over the years and after she passed away they ran it completely. Donna passed away in 2022 and Tina, Dana and Brenda have been running it since. I think having a family business you have a tendency to watch a little closer and take care of your customers a little better. We have had some good “part time help” in the past but as time goes on it gets harder and harder to find any help at all. So we are thankful for family and employees that are family to us.
