We had the good fortune of connecting with Valev Laube and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Valev, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was born and raised in Estonia, a land rich with dense forests, medieval architecture, and a history of resilience. Growing up in such an environment, I developed a deep appreciation for design from a young age. I started by designing album covers and promotional materials for Southern Estonian folklore events and musicians, which nurtured my creative aspirations. Estonia’s rapid modernization amidst its historical backdrop provided a perfect canvas that fueled my passion for integrating traditional and modern design elements. One vivid memory is an evening when my sister asked me to design a simple decorative embroidered element for the Uma Pido t-shirt, drawing inspiration from the design elements used across the Estonian diatonic accordion. We had only one night to complete this project, but our roots inspired us to create a design now worn by hundreds across Estonia.
From the quiet streets of Estonia to the bustling avenues of New York City, my journey has been transformative. My international exploration began at age 11, participating in youth exchange projects where I met peers from Poland, Greece, Sweden, Finland, Lithuania, and more. This experience led me to pursue an education at the United World College of Adriatic in Italy in 2012, fulfilling my dreams of a truly international education. My thirst for international understanding and culture brought me to upstate New York to study at the University of Rochester, and eventually to the vibrant metropolis of New York City. The city’s diverse artistic landscape offered exhilarating challenges that pushed me to adapt and grow. This transition from Estonia’s tranquility to New York’s relentless energy profoundly shaped my approach to design and brand management, making it more dynamic and inclusive of diverse cultural influences.
My career began early; I assisted in my sister’s production company in Estonia, working on graphic and promotional design. This experience laid the groundwork for my career in multimedia design and branding. In Rochester, NY, I had the privilege of working at a digital media and arts center, which provided access to a video studio, photo studio, and digital labs equipped with cutting-edge technologies. This opportunity allowed me to explore various media without the financial constraints that would have been insurmountable in my small village.
Each project I undertake is deeply personal. I strive to weave personal narratives and cultural elements into my work, making each design uniquely impactful. For instance, the project “Dawn till Dusk” initially started as a simple live music event at the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. and has since evolved into an Off-Broadway production touring the East Coast. I often incorporate elements of Estonian folklore and mythology, reflecting my heritage and personal experiences, especially in projects where I have extensive creative control. You can trace aspects of my homeland in every design, even if it’s not immediately obvious.
My background and humble upbringing have not only influenced my professional skills but have also instilled a deep sense of responsibility to honor my roots while embracing new cultures and challenges. This balance is what I aim to reflect in every project I undertake, ensuring that each piece is not only visually appealing but also culturally resonant and personally meaningful.

As a New York-based creative director and branding expert, my journey in the realms of graphic design, web design, marketing, and PR has been marked by an entrepreneurial spirit and a drive to innovate within multiple industries. My professional narrative is one of transforming challenges into opportunities, a trait that has been pivotal to my success as an award-winning designer and entrepreneur. This approach has enabled me to deliver high-impact multimedia and branding solutions for esteemed clients such as Kenneth Cole, Steve Madden, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Helen Yarmak, and FMO Modeling Agency, among others.
The path to where I am today wasn’t straightforward. It demanded not only creativity but also an entrepreneurial mindset to navigate the complexities of industries as diverse as fashion, tech, legal, crypto, and design. Each project brought its unique challenges, from staying ahead of rapidly changing technology to adapting designs that resonate across different cultural contexts. Overcoming these challenges involved a blend of strategic thinking, continuous learning, and an ability to anticipate market trends.
One aspect I am particularly proud of is my nomination to the Forbes Under 30 list in 2020, a testament to the impact and innovation of my work. This recognition was not just a personal milestone but also a confirmation that a commitment to quality and visionary thinking in the digital arts can redefine industry standards and influence market trends.
The lessons I’ve learned through this entrepreneurial journey are invaluable. Adaptability, foresight, and a commitment to authenticity have been my guiding principles. I’ve learned that true success comes from the ability to not just navigate but also shape the market dynamics with visionary digital solutions that transcend traditional boundaries and create meaningful connections.
I want the world to know that my brand represents a fusion of artistic creativity and strategic business thinking. It’s about more than just aesthetics; it’s about crafting impactful narratives that empower brands to tell their stories in compelling and innovative ways. My story is one of continuous evolution, driven by a passion to blend art with technology and a mission to create designs that are not only visually stunning but also strategically effective.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Absolutely, the journey to where I am today has been shaped significantly by a blend of support, inspiration, and collaboration from numerous individuals and organizations. First and foremost, I’d like to extend a profound shoutout to my family. Their unwavering support and belief in my creative pursuits from a very young age were foundational. My sisters, especially, played a pivotal role by involving me in their production projects, which sparked my initial interest in multimedia design.
I would also like to acknowledge the United World College of Adriatic. The scholarship opportunity to study in such a diverse and dynamic environment was a turning point in my life. It not only broadened my educational horizons but also deepened my appreciation for cultural exchange and cooperation. The environment fostered there is something I carry with me in every project and interaction.
Additionally, I must mention the vibrant community at the University of Rochester, particularly the digital media and arts center and my supervisor Berthenia Coltrane who was always such a supportive force and open innovative ideas. The access to cutting-edge technology and mentorship from knowledgeable peers and professors allowed me to experiment and refine my skills in a way that was previously unimaginable.
A special mention goes to the Estonian folklore community. The rich tapestry of stories, music, and art I was exposed to has continually served as a deep well of inspiration for my projects. The folklore not only influences my aesthetic but also instills a sense of responsibility to preserve, respect, and narrate these cultural elements through my work.
Lastly, I’m grateful to every collaborator and client I’ve worked with. Each project has been a learning experience, pushing me to innovate and improve continually. These professional relationships have shaped my career and have been instrumental in the success of each venture.
Each of these influences has contributed significantly to my personal and professional growth, and I am deeply thankful for each opportunity and support I have received along the way.
