We had the good fortune of connecting with Dorey Jacobs and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dorey, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Consistency of how I show up for my brand through all the interactions with my customers. From social media, in person shopping with my mobile trailer to everyday interactions; I never wavier who I am and what my brand stands for. No matter the circumstances I will always show up the same way for my customers.
An example of this is when I was at an event last year, which had hardly any customers attending, however it was one of my best events. It was raining and we had a cold front come in. The location of the event was not the best for rainy weather. Let’s just say I mopped the trailer so much during that event I went through a whole box of wet Swiffer’s because of the mud. I had several vendors come up to me throughout the evening and ask me how I was doing it. This was because they kept seeing everyone with my shopping bags. They said we watch you; you never stop moving. Tell us your secret. So, I told them I don’t half ass anything. If the customer is in the store, I make sure they get the best experience. If the store has a moment of emptiness, I am fixing it for the next customer to have the same fabulous time. Yeah, the weather may be bad and maybe there are not thousands of people, but that does not matter. What matters is not letting that effect your outcome and showing up as if there is a line waiting out the door for people to shop with you.
Each person that visited me that day came back a few times because they had so much fun in the trailer. This is why my first goal has been creating a space that becomes one of your favorite stops on your girl’s day. I tell people you can’t have a bad day when you visit a pink trailer with a disco ball hanging outside. I want everyone to feel inspired when shopping with me. The joy that it brings me to now have regular customers that follow me to different events is indescribable.
When you create a brand, you are the face of that brand. So, before you do anything, decide how you will show up for that brand each and every day.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the owner of Curator & Co, a mobile & online boutique. I left the corporate world 8 months ago where I led over 100 stores across the US. I loved developing and teaching people how to run their business, however I wanted that to be on a larger scale. So, I bought and upgraded a boutique trailer and hit the road. If I was going to do it large scale, I had to take the leap and prove that I could do it on my own from the ground up.
My favorite part about what I do is having a place where ladies find us as the perfect girl’s day stop. Things that set me apart from other boutiques is how I showcase my brand. From the pretty pink trailer to the disco ball hanging outside, I don’t just have these things because they make it a trendy place to shop. There is a purpose around everything I do. Example of one of those things is the disco ball. It represents a magical ball of light. Made of hundreds of pieces of broken glass. I want my customers to know they are not broken they are a Disco Ball.
I am most proud of how my brand has inspired others. It’s special seeing little girl’s faces light up when they visit the pink trailer. They play dress up with their barbies driving around in pink cars but seeing a large-scale version of a pink trailer full of all the frills, pink and sparkle a girl needs; this shows them their imagination can be real life. I have also made it a point to help other women start their businesses by coaching and teaching them from my experiences. Curator & Co is more than just a shop it is a lifestyle. I am proud that in just a short amount of time my brand is being recognized as a brand where women can have fun, connect and grow.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, we are in Houston so we should start with food first. We would start with Brunch. One my of favorite places to dine is Tiny Boxwood. The food is fabulous, and the scene is perfection. Eating in a garden with French music playing in the background is just a vibe that is needed in anyone’s life. Oh, and don’t forget the chocolate chip cookies. We would take a box to go to enjoy for a few days.
After a fabulous meal we would of course go shopping in the River Oaks district. Stop by one of my favorite stores Love Shack Fancy and then go see a movie at IPIC.
We would stay at the Post Oak hotel. Where we would hang out by the pool and enjoy the spa. Then dine at Caracol that evening. There table side hot chocolate is my favorite.
The next day would be full of activities in Katy where we would visit Home Run Dugout and Pop Stroke. After a day full of fun we would then head home and eat at Killens BBQ. Because it is by far the best BBQ I have ever had. I take everyone here that visits and they 100% agree.
We would end the trip hanging for a few days in the Woodlands area taking in all the sites, dining, walking trails and shopping.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have so many people I would love to shout out, but the two I want to share today are my fiancé Sean Ennis and my dear friend/mentor Theresa Beckes.
My fiancé tells me regularly I don’t need him to be successful, however the joy I have with him by my side through this journey of owning my own business makes this experience even richer. Shoutout the man that I love that literally drives my crazy dreams to be a reality. I mean literally because he drives our mobile boutique to each show. Thank you for always being my number one cheerleader and person to push me to always see more in myself. Thank you for all the work you do for our company. You are an amazing man, and I am blessed each day to have you by my side. I love you.
Second shout out is to the most incredible leader I have the pleasure of calling a friend and mentor. You showed me at the start of my career that one person can truly create the culture in a company. That no matter who is in the room you be the best version of yourself each and every day. That if you were outstanding one day you wake up the next day and try and be even more outstanding then the previous. Theresa Beckes, thank you for always being a woman who lifts others up and shows them that they too can be great if they put in the work. You are an icon and queen in my book.
