We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyler “Jet” Boyer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tyler “Jet”, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
For me when we started Athletically Declined Sports, It is not an exaggeration to say for the the first 6-8 months about 3-4 of us were getting 2-3 Hrs of sleep a night for about 80% of the week, The reason is for myself and others we have kids, wives , girlfriends as well as full time jobs. The only time we had was after all of that which, on top of our night owl instincts, really boiled down to what I call stubborn drive. Stubborn drive to me goes beyond regular drive because it forces you to forget that there is another option. Making AD work and becoming successful was our only option, so all that to say drive to see this become bigger than ourselves.
What should our readers know about your business?
Here at Athletically Declined Sports we are a group of sports fans making entertaining and engaging content for the fans by us the hardcore sports fans. What sets us apart is that our structure is that of what you might see historically done by a Barstool but we are focused on bringing that taste of the weekend fun with friends to your screen in every show that we do during the week. While offering not only a variety of talented content creator but also a diverse catalog of show for not just sports but lifestyle, faith, and even gaming. Athletically Declined will always have sports at the heart of what we do but we want everyone to feel like there is something that they can connect with on our channel! We are super excited about our growing network for 2024 as we step into new opportunities to bring higher level content with athletes and influential people the fans want to hear from.
The way we got to where we are business-wise today was pretty simple, have a no quit attitude and just dont stop. A lot of people fail to prepare for growth before it happens, we always have set AD up for the growth prior to it happening. I always run AD as if we were a year into the future so once the changes happen we are always a step ahead. In that same vein we are never afraid to take risks on our content or new show ideas to see what the viewer wants.
The lessons I personally have learned are for one, lead by example and never sacrifice quality for quantity. There are videos we did in month 3 and 4 that still hold up to the quality we have done recently because of this. Another is if you pour into your team and invest in them, you will reap the reward. People are worth your time and as a leader you owe it to pour into them. The last thing is always be ready to sacrifice, if you want to make it anywhere in creating anything like this its about what are you willing to sacrifice to take the next steps. That doesnt mean its a bad thing but it can be very uncomfortable and at times feel impossible however the reality is that someone else will make the sacrifice.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh man okay, so you would have to go down to the best bbq in Houston , Truth BBQ , for the “Whole Shabang”. Then go catch an Astros game at the Juice Box because of course we would have them out in season. Then you gotta stop at the best barbershop in Houston for an edge up GoodFellas Barbershop in friendswood. From there we end the night at our favorite spot in Webster , Chicken N Pickle to end the night
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Oh many that is super easy, first off as cliché as it is, I am so beyond thankful for the opportunities and what feels like unearned blessings at times the Lord has allowed this company to have. Without God alot of the doors that were opened early on, and continue to be opened, with AD would not.
Next up is my wife and 2 kids for allowing me to go after this dream the way I have been privileged to after it. The sacrifices and inconveniences that trying to pull something off to this magnitude not to mention in the space we are in with media, is as time-consuming as it gets! My wife is a rockstar, a super mom and literally the only way I have been able to keep myself in tact, I am forever blessed to have them.
My incredible team, my business partner Spencer Nolen who has been instrumental helping guide some of our best content ideas over the course of this journey. Id be remised if I didn’t recognize the people on our team who have been here from the beginning.
James West, Mikey Esparza, Ricky Ramirez Jr, John & Rachel Clements , Travis Duke, Kyle Clonts , Angel Ramos, Matt Shanks, Alex Moore and all our new comers to the team who are working their butts off every week like they do!
Our Partner Baseballism Apparel, No Rivals Hat , Sole’d Out Urban Wear & Shoe store, SouthSales LLC, Chick N Pickle and Dave & Busters
Our Team at HLX who are new with us on this journey but took a chance on us and saw what we see
Our Mentors in TK Klund who has been pivotal to helping us understand the sports media landscape as well as how to navigate it. Also Barbara Bamberger who;s wisdom and support has helped cultivate what maturity we feel we have gained in this process. Lastly Keith Southard, the first person who allowed myself to really believe that we could make this whole thing work. Your unwavering confidence in myself and this team is why we walk in the confidence we have today.
