We had the good fortune of connecting with Gage Mueller and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gage, what is the most important factor behind your success?
In my line of work, homeowners are prone to getting sold and then never hearing from the sales guy again. I take great pride in my customer service approach and let my clients know they are NOT buying from the company I represent, rather they are buying from ME! This is my reputation and my brand and I want to know when there is a problem. I let them all know right away, that at some point there will be a problem. And while it sucks to have a problem, getting it resolved is way more important. I also let them know that right now this is lip service and it sounds good, but just wait until whatever problem arises and let me prove to you that I really mean it.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
From a young age I have always been the “guy” that knows “a guy” or can get you taken care of. I’m kind of like Radar from Mash. People just gravitate to me as my dad taught me to be a hands on person, how to fix stuff around the house or just in general. So I have a pretty big rolodex of people that can help others. I don’t like to charge for any of these services as I feel that God will repay you in the long run, I’m also a big believer in karma!
I would say the biggest thing that keeps me motivated is when I help someone truly understand the solar industry and have them say, wow you really understand this industry and what I am looking for. You came highly recommended and I can now see why. It is not easy in this industry as so many people have been lied too or misled around what solar and batteries can actually do for them, so it is my mission to change that one homeowner at a time! I have learned that it is ok to tell someone “no, this isn’t right for you”. Sometimes you have to save people from themselves and winning every deal isn’t always about getting a “YES”. It is about educating the homeowner for them to understand what and how this works and let THEM make the decision for themselves.
My brand and my story is. I tell all of my clients where I live, as this is going to be a big investment and one that should not be taken lightly. I will never tell a lie and in fact I encourage my clients to meet with other companies and ask the same questions you asked me and if they tell you something different, one of us is lying to you. And if it is me, I need to know as I have lied to A LOT of people… I also let them know, they better like me because they will be stuck with me for 25 years as I have the same thing on my house and my reputation means more to me than selling them solar. I need them to understand and be happy with their decision to go solar as that is how I build my brand and my business. Referrals mean everything, and after meeting with people and they are relieved because I DIDN’T let them sign anything nor pressure them into anything gives them a huge sigh of relief, and when they are ready to go solar I just hope that I’m the guy they choose because I go at their pace and their agenda NOT MINE… No same day incentives or end of the month specials coming from me. A great price with an amazing company and excellent post install service. That makes for a winning combination in this industry. I understand you can’t win them all, but the amount of times that people went with the “cheaper” option and they end up calling me back because the other company screwed them over is what drives me to continue to provide the level of service that I pride myself on.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is a tough one, as I’m mostly a homebody… There are a few places that I would take them, I’m a big fan of Goode Company Bar B Q and Lopez Mexican Restaurant. Not so much a drinker so that is out of the question for me. Geronimo Adventure Park is a lot of fun and a must do, when you come to town. And attending Rockets/Astros games are always a blast.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My story is about hard work and doing the right thing for people. If you treat people right the money will follow. For a long time I did what I had to do, not what I wanted to do. I then watched a video that Steve Harvey put out called “JUMP” and it made me realize I was doing the wrong thing for so long, the money was great, but I was not really happy with what I was doing on a day to day basis. My little brother has been doing a job he loves for a very long time so I decided to give it a shot and jump into the solar industry after putting solar on my home in 2017 and understanding how it al works. It made sense and more people needed to know the REAL benefits of solar and battery storage, not the snake oil that sales people were trying to peddle. So I guess this would be my little brother Greg in a way that has been doing what he loves for so long. And my Dad for sure as he was this way in his professional career. He was a business owner and never really like having someone else tell him what to do and provided a service that was top notch to his clients.
