We had the good fortune of connecting with Luis Chamorro and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Luis, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
Recycling green waste into mulch, compost, and soil at Heirloom Soils and Warren’s Rock n Mulch in Houston, Texas, has a profound social impact on the community and environment. This process not only reduces landfill waste, significantly lowering greenhouse gas emissions, but also enriches the soil, promoting healthier ecosystems and more vibrant landscapes. By transforming organic materials into valuable products, our facilities create job opportunities for local residents, contributing to economic growth and community resilience. The resulting mulch and compost enhance the beauty of gardens and public spaces, fostering a sense of pride among residents while encouraging sustainable gardening practices. Overall, the initiatives at Heirloom Soils and Warren’s Rock n Mulch exemplify an approach to environmental stewardship, community engagement, and aesthetic enhancement.

What should our readers know about your business?
At a pivotal moment in my career, I faced a choice between two paths: one that would have me blend into the industry and another that would set me apart. I chose the latter, a decision that has opened doors for me to explore my creativity and embrace a more provocative approach to marketing. I thrive on creating reactions—whether through a new product, a bold marketing campaign, or an innovative sales strategy. While this approach may not resonate with everyone, it certainly distinguishes me in a crowded field; like politics, some embrace it while others don’t.

Building a name and reputation is no easy feat, especially in sales. I take pride in my solutions-driven approach. If a client reaches out for a product I don’t carry, I’ll go the extra mile to connect them with a competitor who can help. To me, it’s about finding the right solution, regardless of the source.

Throughout my career, I’ve been involved in a variety of exciting projects, from product development to packaging design and operations improvements. However, one project that stands out is our recent partnership with the Memorial Park Conservancy, where we helped restore the composting grounds within Memorial Park. This initiative is something my team and I are incredibly proud of, as it reflects our commitment to both the environment and our community.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Most of my favorite spots in Houston are on the west side. I love starting my day with a morning walk along the Terry Hershey Trail, followed by a delicious bite at Nori Sushi in Town and Country. For dinner and drinks, The Federal Grill on I-10 and Voss never disappoints. When I have visitors, I always recommend a trip to NASA in Clear Lake—it’s one of the most fascinating museums around. If you’re an art enthusiast, take a stroll down Colquitt Street and visit my friend Cathy at the Dean Day Gallery. For plant lovers and gardening aficionados, I suggest checking out Buchanan’s Native Plants in The Heights, Warren’s Southern Gardens in Kingwood, or Enchanted Gardens and Enchanted Forest in Richmond. And don’t miss the incredible growing operation at Fred Reyes Nursery in Simonton—it’s a hidden gem!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
With 15 years in the green industry, I began my journey as a sales representative, leveraging my bilingual skills to connect with a diverse clientele. In a vibrant city like Houston, where a significant portion of the industry is Hispanic, being bilingual has been a tremendous asset. Early in my career, I faced stiff competition from a company that produced a brand called Lady Bug Soils, Texas’s best-selling bagged soil brand. Their success pushed me to innovate and step outside my comfort zone, recognizing that the mulch industry historically lacked creativity. Today, the landscape has transformed; fierce competition drives local brands to develop unique marketing strategies and products. It’s this rivalry that fuels my ambition and determination to succeed—without my competitors, the thrill of striving for excellence wouldn’t exist. My wife is my biggest pillar of support, and I do what I do for my family, as well as to create a competitive workplace where our staff has a solid foundation to thrive.
