We had the good fortune of connecting with Gloria Hanes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gloria, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind success is a genuine connection with the community. Caring for your community and fostering strong relationships can significantly enhance your brand. By creating a welcoming environment where everyone feels valued, you can turn customers into loyal advocates. Engaging with local needs—through events, partnerships, or simply listening—helps build trust and goodwill. This not only supports business growth but also enriches the community, embodying that “mom and pop” spirit that makes people feel at home.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart is my deep-rooted passion for community and customer service, which began with my first job at Mail & More during high school. I loved helping customers back then, but I never imagined that one day I would own the business! After graduating from Magnolia High School, I joined the Army National Guard, where I embraced exciting opportunities, including airborne school. While I loved the experiences I gained in the Guard, I knew it wasn’t my lifelong career.

When I returned home, I reached out to the owner of Mail & More about the possibility of working there again. To my surprise, she offered not just a job, but the chance to buy the business. After discussing it with my dad, I decided to dedicate my career to my community and customers right here in Tomball. I used my signing bonus from the military as a down payment for the store—a pivotal first step in my journey.

The last four years of ownership have had their share of challenges, but with the unwavering support of my parents and my husband, I’ve persevered. I’m continuously learning and adapting, attending trainings, and networking with other business owners to find new ways to grow and better serve my customers. I want the world to know that I’m dedicated to creating a welcoming environment where everyone feels valued. My journey is about compassion, resilience, and a commitment to my community, and I’m excited for what the future holds!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A must-see when visiting Tomball is definitely the Tomball Farmers Market! It’s a wonderful way to spend a whole day in Old Tomball, shopping from local farmers and picking up fresh veggies and fruits. After exploring the vendors, I highly recommend checking out the shops along Main Street, where you can find charming antique stores and boutiques. My favorites for cute outfits are Vickie B’s and Jayden Layne Boutique—I always stop by if I need a wardrobe refresh. I also love catching live music at venues like Main Street Crossing and Dosey Doe, where you can enjoy fantastic concerts. And for a great Texas barbecue meal, you can’t miss Bexar Barbecue—the owner is fantastic, and the BBQ is the best in town by far!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate this shoutout to my parents, who instilled in me the values of compassion, drive, and dedication. Their teachings have been foundational to my journey. I also want to acknowledge my military background, which taught me invaluable lessons in leadership and perseverance. Both influences have shaped who I am today and how I approach my business, reminding me of the importance of community and resilience in everything I do.
