Meet Meagan Kuharski | Owner and Stylist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Meagan Kuharski and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Meagan, how do you think about risk?
Purchasing Salontrose was the biggest risk I’ve taken to date. When I first interviewed with Shoutout, this was one of the questions I remember answering, and being unsure of how running my own business would go. I just took the leap, I said yes to becoming the new owner, with no manual or guidance on how that would look. Taking this risk, putting my life savings into Salontrose, was the quickest decision I’ve ever made, but it also was the push I needed to really discover who I am, not only as a human, but as a business owner. It is not for the weak, but with no risk, there is very little reward, and our salon has brought me a ton of reward.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Salontrose isn’t just a salon where you come in, get your hair done and leave. We are personable, empathetic, friendly and inclusive. We want to know our clients stories, what inspires them daily, and what’s important to them. We are an ever-changing industry, and keeping up with that can be challenging, but our clients are what drives us to be better every single day. Without them, Salontrose would not be where it is today. Without the team members we have, our salon would not be where it is. They are a dynamite group, who respect each other, work together, and lift each other up. That has always been our mission here at Salontrose, to inspire and create. Of course, it hasn’t always been peachy. Finding a team that believes in your core values and believes in the future of the business, that can be tough. I’ve found being upfront and honest with your team, communicating with them, and trusting them is the only way you can be truly successful, and not just financially, but building an authentic and honest culture that your team embraces, that’s success.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I find that anytime someone asks me where they should go in Houston, I always start with food, and I mean always. The options are endless! My best friend would want coffee first and foremost, and Catalina is the BEST in Houston. If the weather was warm a rooftop or outdoor theater, which we have a few! Patio sitting in the spring time here is perfection. Postino is always my go to, the goat cheese meatballs are *chefs kiss.*
I do not go out as much as I used to, but Houston has the best hidden dive bars you can find anywhere. Pool tables, low lighting, Merle Haggard on the radio. That’s my idea of a good night out. My favorites are BobCat Teddy’s, Komodo’s in Midtown, and Lolas. Of course, everyone’s idea of a perfect day is different, but with Houston, you really have everything. Between Memorial and Hermann Park, downtown Main St, and the Heights shopping areas. You can’t go wrong.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Without the previous owner of Salontrose, I would not have the success I do today. Of course, I took over the leadership position, but they had created a salon that was profitable, affordable for clients, and a home away from home for its team members, I just had to continue to maintain that energy. My family also was a huge factor in my success, and not just the success of the salon, but me as an individual. They have always been there for me, through the good bad and the ugly. They deserve the loudest shoutout for simply being there, listening to my struggles, and offering their unconditional support.
