Meet Dia Tisdel-pickens | Founder & Step Instructor at Step + Sip

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dia Tisdel-pickens and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dia, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My decision to start Step + Sip was somewhat unexpected, but it stemmed from my passion for both fitness and creating a welcoming, enjoyable atmosphere. I became a certified Hip-Hop step aerobics instructor simply because I loved the energy of step classes and wanted to bring a fresh vibe to the workout with diverse music. However, after getting certified, I faced the challenge of attracting people to my classes. Many were intimidated by the complexity of the moves, so I decided to make the experience more inviting by adding cocktails and a social aspect. This was the turning point that led to the creation of Step + Sip. What started as a fun workout party quickly transformed into a supportive community of like-minded women who are committed to staying fit and healthy, without having to give up the foods and drinks they love.

What should our readers know about your business?
Step + Sip is a unique fitness experience that blends fun, energetic workouts with the social enjoyment of cocktails and a live DJ. We focus on creating a welcoming environment where fitness and fun coexist. What sets Step + Sip apart is not just the fusion of hip-hop step aerobics with an inclusive, relaxed social vibe, but also the community we’ve built. Our workout parties and weekly classes cater to women who want to stay fit and healthy while still enjoying the things they love—like great food and drinks—without feeling like they have to choose between the two.
I’m most proud of the community we’ve fostered. What started as a simple idea to make step aerobics more approachable has grown into a supportive group of like-minded women who encourage each other and embrace balance. It’s exciting to see how Step + Sip has become a space where people come for the workout, but stay for the relationships and shared experience.
The road to where I am today was not always easy. Initially, getting people to step out of their comfort zones and try something new was a challenge. Step aerobics often had a reputation for being intimidating, so I had to find a way to make it more accessible and fun. That’s when I added the social component—cocktails and a laid-back environment—which made the classes feel more like a celebration than a traditional workout.
Developing a solid marketing and business strategy was a challenge, especially since marketing wasn’t my strength. However, through research and continuous learning, I’ve been able to improve and refine my approach. I’ve learned the importance of time management, perseverance, and the strength of a supportive community while juggling the many roles required to keep the business moving forward.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is a tough one since I don’t get out much, but here’s the itinerary I’d plan over a few days! We’d definitely incorporate some workouts and good food—gotta keep the balance, right? On one day, I’d take her to a Pilates class at Eustress Movement Studio in Bellaire, and of course, she’d have to join me for my Zero-proof step aerobics class on Wednesday at MaxFit.
For food, we’d make sure to hit a few of my favorites. For the true Houston experience, a visit to Pappadeaux is a must, and we’d also go to my favorite Mexican spot, Teotihuacan. Breakfast at Harry’s would be another must-do.
And of course, I’d tell her never to leave Houston on a Sunday because our Sunday fundays are a vibe! We’d kick off the day with brunch at Leeland House, then start our bar crawl at The Spot Eado and see where the day takes us. It’ would be a perfect mix of fitness, food, and fun spread across a few days!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Step + Sip would not exist without my husband, Reggie. His unwavering support is the foundation of my business, and I am endlessly grateful for all the roles he takes on—whether as the resident Step + Sip DJ, photographer, student, my personal muscle for moving equipment, business advisor, or marketing assistant (and everything in between). He does it all with dedication and always encourages me to keep going, even when I sometimes want to quit. His contributions are immeasurable, and I can’t thank him enough for everything he does.
