Where are you from and how has it impacted you?


Even if you are from the same neighborhood as someone else, you might still be coming from different places. Where you are from is a complicated question and it elicits complicated, but interesting and thought-provoking responses. We’ve shared some of those responses below.

I am from Carverdale on the Northwest side of town in Houston. Where I am from is a low income black community. With my upbringing I come from a two working parents. My dad was a Truck Driver and my mom worked for Southwestern Bell (BellSouth back in the day). Growing up it was five of us and so I am no stranger to being responsible and pulling my weight. I was born and raised in the state of Michoacan, Mexico in a family of five boys and our parents. We were taught that family is an integral part of society and learned to love, respect, and support each other while also being good neighbors. Every weekend, we would gather at my grandma’s house and play with our cousins for hours.
