Meet Twyla George | Licensed Esthetician

We had the good fortune of connecting with Twyla George and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Twyla, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I wanted to do something I enjoyed, have a career and do something for myself. Do something I’d always wanted to do and it serve in a capacity of serenity and enjoyment. I wanted to escape the depleted cycle of demands, non rewarding and antiquated jobs and mindsets I’d been doing for so long. I was tired of helping others grow, while I was struggling with non fulfillment and lack of creativity and respect.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a Licensed Esthetician, I don’t focus on the latest fades and gimmicks. I focus on the health benefits of body treatments. I want my clients to come to relax, feel rejuvenated, and heard. Targeting the areas they’re most concerned about and enhancing their beauty and confidence. I use products and devices that are pure, clean and organic with some holistic benefits.
I mostly focus on mature skin and men, but I do have several younger clients. I also speak whenever possible to share the health benefits of skincare, such as in relieving stress and detoxification.
Customer service and satisfaction has been a foundation since childhood. With both of my parents being self employed, I learned the value and importance at listening to the client. As well as making them feel valued, catered to and pampered. If I don’t know the answer, I’ll research and get back with them. If it’s something I don’t know or offer, I’ll let them know that I’ll look into it and/or refer them to the best option that I’d go to.
Making my clients feel comfortable, relaxed and safe is a priority to me. And it comes easy. Confidentiality is a practice I hold to a high standard.
Having a nonprofit that caters to less fortunate families, I realize the importance of meeting the needs of my clients and being able to give back.
Having a background in creativity also helps me in having my salons feel warm, welcoming and relaxing. I’ve been a wedding consultant, coordinator and floral designer for many years and this has helped me in listening to my clients, offering suggestions without being pushy and setting an atmosphere of confidence.
Having side hustles allows me to have outlets to step out of the tranquility mood and use my organizational and social skills to balance my life. This would be in event coordination, decorating, floral design, occasional administrative rolls and my nonprofit.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in South East Texas and we don’t have a lot of tourists locations per se, however … we’re 90 miles from Houston, 260 miles to Dallas, 240 miles to Austin and 60 miles from Lake Charles, LA, so there are lots of things to do. (I’d prefer to meet somewhere like Destin, FL or Charleston, NC and explore, but since that wasn’t the question.)
Day 1 – my best friend would want me to cook for her, so I’d make sure I did that and got that behind me. I’d then take her to my salon and pamper her with a nice facial and Bacial. Show her the world’s largest fire hydrant and all of the murals downtown.
Day 2 – drive over to Houston and spend the day shopping and eating at a couple of restaurants and possibly a dessert house. Eat at Trulucks or Pappaseata’s, Chocolate Bar. Check out whatever event is happening.
Day 3 and 4 – maybe take an overnight stay to Dallas or Austin and do some sightseeing that’s unique to Texas, restaurants and specialty shops. Fun, hilarious, I dare you kind of things. Eat at places like Dakota’s. Come back through Waco and visit the Silo’s.
Day 5 – spend the day, relaxing by the pool, having my sweet hubs cater to us, reminiscing on our childhood, her big family and how she escapes to my small family; watch a movie and plan our next 10 year reunion. Which will for sure be Destin or Charleston or Atlanta or ….

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Two people actually:
1. My husband Andrew. He’s always supportive and helps me with reaching outside my comfort zone. He feels I can do anything. Andrew reins me in when I try to take on too much and balances me. He’s my biggest cheerleader and even calls me ‘his famous wife!’
2. Adina Keating! She’s my pastor’s wife and a dear friend. Adina has believed in me, challenged me to believe in myself and to give my fears a test and try to do the things I feel uncomfortable doing. She encourages me to be grateful, to not be so hard on myself and to realize that other people see me in a different way than I realize.
I’ve grown in so many ways and areas, I amaze myself. I’m no longer as insecure or critical of my work, assignments, creativity and in trying new things.
