We had the good fortune of connecting with Kat Bailey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kat, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Honestly, the idea started as a fun way to help Porter learn his alphabet while keeping things exciting for both of us. He loved singing the classic “A is for Apple” song — so much so that I heard it about 100 times a day. One day, I said, “A can be for something else… A is for Astros,” and that lightbulb moment changed everything. From there, the concept grew into Porter’s H-Town ABCs — a project that blended my love for Houston culture, my creativity, and my entrepreneurial drive into something tangible that could inspire other families too.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is storytelling — bringing culture, community, and joy to life through words and visuals. Porter’s H-Town ABCs is more than a children’s book; it’s a love letter to Houston, told through the eyes of my son. I’m most proud of how it celebrates our city in a way that’s fun, educational, and culturally rich.

Getting here wasn’t easy — there were countless edits, publishing hurdles, and moments of doubt. But I overcame them by staying focused on the “why”: creating something meaningful for my son and for Houston kids to see themselves in.

I’ve learned that when you lead with passion and authenticity, the right people and opportunities show up. I want the world to know that my brand is rooted in representation, love for community, and the belief that learning should feel like home.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting Houston for a week, we’d eat, explore, and vibe our way through the city. First stop — breakfast at The Breakfast Klub for those legendary wings & waffles, then a stroll through Hermann Park and the Museum District. We’d hit Frenchy’s for lunch and maybe a mural tour in EaDo for photo ops.

We’d spend an afternoon at Project Row Houses soaking in art and culture, then grab dinner at Lucille’s for a taste of Southern-inspired excellence. Nighttime? Sunday Funday vibes at Chapman & Kirby or live music at The House of Blues.

We’d also swing by Trill Burgers, catch a Rockets or Astros game, and make a stop at Emancipation Park. Houston is a city where every corner has a story, and by the end of the week, they’d be as in love with H-Town as I am.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shoutout to my son Porter — the heart and co-author of Porter’s H-Town ABCs. And to the city of Houston, thank you for inspiring every page and showing so much love for this project.
