We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Klaassen-Bosworth and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachel, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
After participating in the 2017 Women’s March, I was incredibly moved to do what I could to forge an alternative path for the women of the world wanting to create something of our own. I didn’t know what or how I was going to do that, but I did have three things going for me: 1. My dad is a restaurant owner and artist and I’ve always wanted to have a business of my own 2. After several years of working in various roles in the nonprofit arts fundraising world, I had developed a unique and well-rounded set of skills 3. I’m quite tenacious – you can thank my parents for that – and once I’ve made my mind up about something, I’m going to find a way to make it happen After many ideas, iterations, and trial-runs, Social Haus was born! Social Haus is currently a party of 1 – me! – and my portfolio is small and mighty, but it’s a dream come true to have the opportunity to wake up every day and play a small part in supporting powerhouse women make their dreams a reality.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
According to Score, American women entrepreneurs represented approximately 42% of all American businesses, employed 9.4 million Americans, and generated $1.9 trillion in revenue in 2019 – a steady increase from 2016 that shows no signs of stopping, by the way! Being a woman entrepreneur comes with a unique set of challenges though – mainly, misperception, misconceptions, exclusion, and access to capital. In today’s world, someone can start a business with an idea, a cell phone, and a strong WiFi connection. I started noticing how many women were creating empires of their own in every type of industry, some simply starting with an Instagram profile. Of course, these weren’t just any ol’ Instagram profiles – these women were using social media with intention as a business and marketing tool, and it was paying off, literally and figuratively. I created Social Haus so that I could help other women entrepreneurs infuse their voice, passions, and goals with a savvy, strategic social media presence to connect them with the people who they can make a real impact on, and who can do the same for them.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Of course, I’ve got to keep it local! I’m a huge coffee lover, so you’ll want to stop for coffee at Uncle Bean’s on Houston Avenue and grab a kolache or donut at Shipley’s down the street off of North Main. Another great spot for coffee is A 2nd Cup! Your cup of coffee from A 2nd Cup supports their fight against human trafficking and you can shop their marketplace for local goods from other artisans. Grab brunch or lunch at Revival Market and then head to 19th Street for strolling and shopping at the local boutiques and quirky shops The Heights has to offer. While you’re in The Heights, take a yoga class at the donation-based studio, Black Swan Yoga. All White Oak location classes are being offered at Raven Tower, by the way! Speaking of Raven Tower, White Oak Music Hall is a great place for live music (pre-Covid, of course). It’s not my favorite place for live music in the city, but I’m keeping that hidden gem to myself! If the weather is nice, and you want to get out of the city a bit, head to the beach in Galveston, hike in Sam Houston National Forest, camp at Lake Livingston, or paddleboarding at Lake Conroe. You can also get plenty of nature inside the loop at Hermann Park (the Japanese Garden is so dreamy!), the Arboretum, and the Bayou!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my mentor, powerhouse woman, and fellow business owner, Selah Hirsch. She took me under her entrepreneurial wing from the jump and has taught me so much about business, being open-handed, and always coming from a place of authenticity – in business and with Self! Social Haus would not be what it is today without the support of Selah and the branding and marketing expertise she shared with me through her business, Express My Brand!
