We had the good fortune of connecting with Kim Mason and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kim, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
This is an easy question. I am one of the women I want to serve. I wanted to help women like myself who learn differently. Not all people learn the same. I I remember feeling like I would never be able to excel in school or really at anything else. It started when I was in the third grade. I knew something was different about me. I did not understand like the other kids. I studied so hard and still I struggled with reading and I read very slowly. I did not pronounce words correctly. On top of that, I frequently skipped small words on the page believing in my heart that someone must have JUST put that word there. I hated being called on in school. The kids would laugh. I had problems understanding math concepts too. I did not learn that I was dyslexic and ADD until I was an adult. Testing for dyslexia and other learning challenges did not begin until 1980. By that time, I had spent many years struggling. Once a child leaves High School, the help stops.
What should our readers know about your business?
I am so blessed to be the Executive Director of Women Cultivating Greatness. Our mission is to provide economic, educational, and emotional support to all women desiring personal development with an emphasis on women with learning challenges and disabilities. We offer education, resources, and support to help women connect, communicate, and collaborate with like-minded women focused on quality of life improvement. Our vision is to provide awareness and solutions to all women with learning challenges, disabilities and obstacles. Our ultimate goal is to provide sustainable resources and support to assist our target audience with leveling the playing field so they may sustain a balance between community, family, life, school, and work. Because of my life experiences with learning challenges, we are dedicated to giving every woman an equal opportunity to achieve success with solutions designed to provide life balance. We want to provide practical solutions that enable women to take control of their career and personal growth. We focus on women with dyslexia, attention deficit disorder and attention deficit disorder hyperactivity. What I’m most proud of is our I AM Great… In Spite Of program that consist of 10 classes that will help the women we serve level the playing field. We believe that if each women knows their learning style they will be more successful. If you learn differently, we need to help you understand how you learn best. I overcame and continue to overcome by own learning challenges by preparation, time management, and implementing activities and techniques that will make me successful. It is not easy…. but it’s worth it. I also continue to practice self-care because having any learning challenge can be frustrating. Positivity is the key. You can see the glass half full or you can choose to see it half empty. What I want the world to know about our organization is that it’s important to us to be a resource. We will do a screening to determine if you have some of the indicators of a person with learning challenges. I want to take the stigmatism with people that learning differently are “slow.” That is the furthest from the truth. Most people who learn differently are amazing and very creative.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love resorts! I would take anyone to a topical island. Swimming, snorkling, and all of the other water sports are amazing. I love seafood. That’s my favorite and I love 5 star restaurants.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to thank my grandmother and mother for their unconditional love. They helped me believe I could do anything. I would like to thank people who have dedicated their lives to teaching. I had a few amazing teachers that took the time to help me along the way.
