Meet Muriel Vancauwen: Hairstylist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Muriel Vancauwen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Muriel, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
I am very happy to come from Paris and live in New York for my career, it was a big chalenge, but after understanding this city and what the opportunities you have from of you here, in New York, I just follow my instincts and I took a different direction for my job, I used my knowledge to change industry, I finally find my road where I am very happy with my new private clients instead the fashion industry as a hairstylist, in America, I give up the fashion world but it take me back for some huge few missions during the year than I will never expected, for example as a chef hairstylist for the most famous luxury Brand of the world for shows , events or Hair -coloring shooting for L’oreal etc…. That’s make me very happy and proud of myself.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I got the change to be choices by a master Mister Jean Louis David, to work in this fashion industry in 1986 , work with the best top models , photographers, talents designers, teams etc… travelling all over the worlds for shows , shooting or advertising etc..this time wasn’t easy at all. I was a beginner and talented peoples was very difficult to manage with, they try to push you out in a second they feel than you are not sure about yourself but they gave me the possibilities to go over my fear, to finally bring out from my mind or my expectations some incredible creations, it was no hair in the final, it was ART. I had the feeling than I had a magic hands, after few years , I realize than I don’t have any hands, It was all in my mind already and for more than 20 years we was a small group of peoples who was in this industry and always the same person….it make you feel like you are special, unique, you could copy other, get inspirations from other but no one could have the same creativity that you in the final The lessons I learned it is : stay yourself, be confident, practice, study in your industry , listen other young or old, look deeper, look behind the eyes, look outside the cages, accept de difference, learn from the differences, teach with the difference. I was propelled into a world that I was not born and I blossomed like a bird that flies free: never stop flying ,lower or higher. try to touch your sky.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I will bring my friends first at the Empire States building , the Met Museum, The Moma, etc..Take a Boat all around Manhattan, the Brooklyn Bridge. I will try to do Ice skating in the winter time, or biking on summer in Central Park, Buschwick tag street I will bring them at the Corner Burger in Chelsea, To east Village At French restaurant call pardon My French, Café Clover, The Distrit with the Ocean View, some roof top to admire the night view from New York. walking all around Manhattan to discover different vibes from Manhattan I could bring them to skying Upstates for one day, climbing rock indoor Far rockaway in the beach etc…
