We had the good fortune of connecting with Jalika C. Morgan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jalika C., we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I first thought about starting my business, I was a blogger and a crafter trying to make an impact on others. I found that through my many creative talents, I was able to make others happy. So, I figured, why not make my art available for people to receive and share with others. My goal was and is to make a big impact on people’s mind, body, and soul and use the tools and talents that were given to me to help someone else. If I can touch the heart of just one person and help them make a change then I’m happy.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is very controlled with a splash of happiness. I say this because art is the only time that I can be free but I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t throw a little perfection into the mix. What sets me apart from the others is everyone has their own way of doing things. Nobody can do what I do, how I do it because I have my own little imprint on it. I got to where I am by being myself and letting my art flow. In a controlled way, of course. I am most proud of myself for finally starting my business. It took me decades to start it. I knew I wanted to start a business but never knew what to do. I tried photography, which I still do now but, doing something where I get to use my hands and create physical art is super amazing. When someone purchases from me, it is such an awesome feeling to know that others love what I do and want a piece for themselves. I have put in the work to gain knowledge and experience in what I do. I have put in the work to be kind to others even when they’re not so kind to me. And in return, I have received an abundance of support. It definitely was not easy. I have plenty of days where I felt like I wasn’t good enough. I had plenty of days where I felt like I was doing it for nothing. If it wasn’t for my support system, I would not have made it to where I am today. I have learned that I should not put so much pressure on myself. If people love my art, then that’s amazing. If they don’t, that’s okay too. I cannot force anyone to like or support what I do. I want the world to know that my brand is not just my products. Of course, I would love it if everyone purchased my hard work but that’s not all that there is. Behind my work is someone who wants to make a change in the world. My goal is to help myself and others become better versions of themselves. Now, I do love humor so I may use a little humor at times. Honestly, though, I want to challenge people to take a good look at themselves and find what they need to seek and find growth. I know some people may be thinking, how can I do that with Candles, Apparel, Stickers, etc. Let me put it like this, try lighting a candle, take a deep breath, smell the aroma, and meditate. You’ll see what I’m talking about. As far as the other products, the messages they carry are there to help. Whether you have something to say and want to share it with others or if you just need to remind yourself of something, this is what Sincerely, Jalika Cherie is about.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m mostly a homebody so I don’t get out much. The fact that we’re in the middle of a pandemic doesn’t help either. There aren’t many places that we would want to go but I’ll do my best, Well, my favorite spot of all is Hermann Park. I always take visitors to Hermann to do a mini shoot for my memories. Pictures are how I remember most things. I also love to sit by the water to relax. The scenery is amazing. I would take them to pick up food from one of Houston’s best kept secrets, Our Corner Catering for lunch which starts at 11 am. My favorite dish is the Oxtails, Greens, and Rice. The oxtails come with two sides besides the rice but I just get extra greens because they are so good. The best part is, they deliver. You can place your order by calling 832-206-2065 or 832-638-5189. I highly recommend that everyone checks them out. I can eat their food every single day. The Candy Shack is another goody. Their daiquiris are pretty tasty. Another place we would have to go is Half Price Books. I love love love this place. I mean, who wouldn’t love buying books at amazing prices?! I love reading books so much that I started a collection. This place would be a terrible place to go if they flew here because of the number of books they would purchase. They would love it though, The last place we would go is to New Life Ministries Non-Denominational Church located at 4726 Reed Rd, Houston, TX, 77033. Service starts at 8 AM every Sunday. Apostle Morgan and Pastor Morgan are amazing leaders. Through them, I have learned the meaning of love and family. The music is amazing and the message is always on point.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Oh man, there are so many people who have helped me get to where I am. I guess I can go ahead and list them. First, I want to dedicate my shoutout to my mom who has been my rock, voice of reason, and my number one supporter throughout my life. Next, is the other two members of The Dream Team. They are Maranda Evans and Christian Simmons, the President and Vice President of The Troubled Movement, which is a local Non-profit. Last but not least, I would like to dedicate this to my Husband, CJ Morgan, who has been by my side since day one. He gave me the push I needed to actually start my business.
