We had the good fortune of connecting with LaRyss and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi LaRyss, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
The only thing I have ever wanted to be is a singer. I truly feel it’s a dream and calling I was born with and it’s why I say I came out of the womb singing and haven’t shut up since. I’ve been singing my entire life and I just know it’s the purpose God has for me.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart from other artists is my story and my heart to serve others- specifically in regards to mental health. I just want to help people heal from whatever it is they have battled or are still battling today. My music is my story. In it I share my traumas, my struggles, my relationships and my victories. God gave me the gift of a voice, the ability to put my heart into songs and the passion for music and for people living HEALED. I am on the up and up of my healing journey and In it I have found a new purpose not only as an artist but as a human. To help. To just help people heal in every way possible. To love people and wrap them in a hug through my music and say to them in lyrics- it’s ok, YOURE ok, it’s ok not to be ok, but you WILL be ok. Better than okay. You will heal and you will love and you will have peace of mind and joy in your life. Since I have been saved and changed through God’s redemption I have been using my platform to spread nothing but a message of love and peace. I intend the same through my artistry- that it would influence lives in a way that brings LIFE to the fullest and encourages practices of healing, truth, authenticity and positivity only. When people listen to my music they won’t hear another artist trying to make commercial radio friendly music in order to achieve self recognition and clout, they will see themselves in me, they will hear their pain in my voice and their future victories in my lyric. They will be connected to me in a way humanity desperately needs to connect and I will continue to tell my story through music and serve organizations close to my heart- anti sex trafficking non profits & mental health foundations- until the whole world is healed. That is why I do what I do. This is why I am who I am and this is what sets me apart as an artist.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m glad y’all asked this because 2020 I actually did a staycation for my birthday. My sister and my two best friends and I stayed in a hotel at the Galleria for the weekend and did all my favorite things in houston. We went to sushi one night- my favorite sushi spots are Kuu in Memorial, Uptown sushi in uptown park, Uchi on Montrose! We went to High tea on at Cafe Poetes in midtown which was seriously the cutest thing I’ve ever done in my entire life and a bucket list check for me! We also went to Maryz on Richmond to eat and smoke hookah! Maryz and Cafe Layal on Richmond are my favorite hookah spots. Other places to eat: Coco’s crepes, Sixty Vines, Local Foods, Snooze, the original Carabbas on Kirby! My favorite juice bar ever is Trough juice bar in Rosenburg. My favorite thing to do is go thrifting so I would definitely take my visitor thrifting all around the city! Houston has a great museum district too, I would go to the arts museum! I would take them to China town off bellair and eat at Fu Fu restaurant and then get some yummy boba! Can you tell I like to eat? Lol I’m not a big drinker but if I want a cocktail I’d go somewhere like the toasted coconut so it’s a whole experience but I’d prefer a cute latte at a cool coffee shop! Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family 100% deserves all the credit in the world for encouraging me my entire life and especially over the past 7 years of me doing music as a recording artist. They’ve always dreamed big for me and seen and spoken big things over my life and honestly that have believed in me more than I’ve believed in myself most of the time. I’m beyond thankful for them. My dad specifically has put SO much into trying to make my dreams a reality and helping me handle it as a business. I’m very blessed to have such a supportive family that reminds me that I’m doing what I was made to do.
