We had the good fortune of connecting with Sabreen Cosmetics and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sabreen, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
We started Sabreen Cosmetics in honor of our aunt Nabeehah Sabreen, who lost her resilient battle with Breast Cancer in 2009. As sisters, we wanted to create a brand that would honor her life and legacy. In the midst of developing the brand, we found a need for clean beauty products for women of color. Through our research from the EWG, we’ve found that almost 75% of products marketed to Black women had potentially harmful ingredients. We wanted to ensure that our products were clean, vegan, cruelty-free, and also luxurious, and sustainable.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Sabreen Cosmetics was founded in 2009 in honor of our aunt Nabeehah Sabreen who lost her resilient battle with Breast Cancer in 2009. We founded the luxury clean beauty brand to honor her life and legacy, and to provide luxury clean beauty products to women of color.
We believe that luxury beauty should never sacrifice quality ingredients, exceptional performance, or ethics. At Sabreen Cosmetics, that is the gold standard we fervently stand behind. We don’t believe beauty should be harmful to anything on earth.
Our handcrafted, curated products are always formulated with luxurious clean, vegan, and cruelty-free ingredients. We also proudly deliver our products in sustainable, recyclable, and reusable premier packaging.
Collectively as sisters, we decided that clean beauty and more recently luxury clean beauty was an important niche for women of color, and an audience that is often overlooked. We decided that women of color deserved quality, luxury products that were safe for use, and handcrafted for their specific cosmetic needs. We are honored to be able to fill that need as a brand.
Building our brand has not been without challenges, however, we embrace those changes with delight as we truly love what we do.
Foundational business lessons we have learned along the way are the importance of having a strong marketing strategy, outsourcing tasks to qualified reputable professionals, and the power of excellent product development. These are a few of the many lessons that we have learned during our entrepreneurial endeavors that have shaped us into the entrepreneurs we are today.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If our friends were coming to the DMV for the weekend, we would love to take them to DC Wharf in SW, DC, Georgetown in NW, H Street, The National Harbor, City Center, U Street, City Georgia Ave, Florida Ave, and different places in Prince Georges County, Maryland. The DMV area is a vibrant area filled with some of the best national tourist attractions in the nation, with also a strong historic community of African Americans.
While there are so many shops and restaurants that we could name and love in the area some of our favorites are:
-Horace & Dickies- formerly on H Street.
-Farmers Fishers Bakers
-& Pizza
-Captain White’s Seafood
-Ruff N Ready, Hyattsville, MD
-The Park at 14th
-Ozio’s
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We would love to dedicate our shoutout to our beloved aunt Nabeehah Sabreen. You are embedded in everything we do as sisters and as a brand. We truly are honored to be your nieces and will continue to grow our brand and your legacy in your honor. By using the principles and values you instilled in us as young girls, we commit to using the gems you gave us to guide us on our journey not only in business but in life. We love you and miss you dearly!
Your nieces,
Saliah, Najiyyah and Kareemah
