We had the good fortune of connecting with Pamela and Bryant White and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Pamela and Bryant, what do you attribute your success to?
Bryant and I began painting 18th Century American history about twenty years ago . We had each been working in commercial art- book illustration for me and design work for him with most of our spare time involved in historic events. It was this love of history that gave us our brand . We had discovered that many stories and people from the colonial and Revolutionary War periods had never been told and we decided to paint them. Our market is small but so is our competition. There are very few artists willing or interested in researching history so that leaves much of the work to us.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Our works show American history during its formative years. After years of creating historic art as a sideline, we had the opportunity to pursue this full time. Pam made the jump first, and I followed on later. It took a great deal of work, as it still does today. You can’t rely on being a talented artist to be successful… we found that our profession was actually three professions- painter, researcher and marketer. Each segment demands equal attention. This counts for long days; we pretty much work all of the time. It is work, but it is work that we enjoy, and think that the messages and inspiration that we try to convey through our art is worth it.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
We live in a rural community, with small towns near by. The closest with amenties is Bedford, PA. For a rural town of about 6000, there are some great surprises. Bedford Springs is a resort of the highest caliber- a huge restored 188o’s hotel/resort, it has excellent restaurants, and some great history behind it. In the town itself, several great restaurants are there- the 10/09, Golden Eagle inn, and a true farm to table, the Horn O’Plenty, are a few. Old Bedford Brewery is a micro brewery and bike/kayak shop; what a great combo! There are several historic sites within an hour of here, Fort Bedford, and the Espy House are in town. The Espy House was George Washington’s headquarters when he was here for the Whiskey Rebellion (look that one up!) Fort Loudoun, PA, and Fort Frederick, MD, are a short drive, Yes, these are historic sites…but that’s what we do!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are a great deal of folks who have been part of what we are today…models, fellow historians, researchers, and of course, family, some of whom fulfilled all of those aforementioned roles! We would have to thank all of our clients and collectors who believe it is important to keep our country’s history alive for future generations, so that they may learn from our past.
