We had the good fortune of connecting with Alycia Anderson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alycia, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process behind Toxic Love Company was to build a brand to help individuals in different types of toxic situations realize how unhealthy these type of relationships or situations are, and choose a path to move forward with either diminishing, or removing themselves from toxicity. Toxic Love Company offers a variety of clothing and accessory items to assist in educating, achieving self-love, healing, and choosing positivity over toxicity.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Professionally, I’ve always loved business, but in life, my experiences led me to help others. I actually went to school to be an accountant. I have a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and an MBA, and I’ve done payroll and accounting for over 15 years. I’ve always prided myself on supporting everyone as much as I could, and helping others build their businesses and brands. I decided, after being in a toxic situation, that I wanted to do something to help others educate themselves on the signs and patterns of abuse and unhealthy situations.
Toxic Love Company was developed as a self love, self recognition, non-judgmental; healing brand. Our logo is skulls because I have always had an obsession with skulls, but in my mind skulls represent a mind we know nothing about. Most individuals see skulls and automatically think morbid thoughts or something that entails darkness. I see skulls and think about the mind within the skull. There’s a beauty in the unknown. You never know what’s in the mind or what someone is or has went through until you educate yourself or actually get to know the unknown. Therefore I came up with “My mind, your perception”. There are struggles that people go through, that we may not know about, but we’re quick to judge individuals based off of our own perceptions, which can also be toxic.
I developed Toxic Love Company because through networking, conversations, and in my own situations, I realized so many people are dealing with toxicity and may not know how to process or escape their current situation. Toxicity is not just about toxic relationships, it’s about prejudgment, about negative perceptions, about kicking bad habits, and about healing ourselves individually, and as a society. Any habit or addiction that does not bring about a positive feeling or outcome can be deemed as toxic.
Dealing with toxicity can be very challenging. When helping others you have to have an open mind, not be quick to judge, be able to exercise confidentiality, and have an immense amount of empathy for all situations. I’ve learned that not everything that glitters is gold. Abuse can come from those you least expect and coping with toxic situations can mentally leave an individual exhausted, and have them turn to more toxic coping mechanisms.
I want the world to know that by recognizing, facilitating self-love, and going through a healing process, we as individuals, don’t have to live hurt, embarrassed or ashamed, but strive to be the best person we can be by moving forward positively, therefore, being able to have a healed mentality, healthy relationships, and a healthy lifestyle in the future.
Toxic Love Company is now an LLC, and we are working on becoming a non-profit that will assist victims of domestic violence, victims of narcissistic abuse, and displaced homemakers in escaping and developing a positive mindset, and living a life that is free of toxic situations, as minor or major as they may be.
20% of all profits from our Toxic Love Company brand will be donated to our non-profit to assist with counseling services, escape plans, housing/childcare assistance, and employment services, for individuals that will require these type of resources, moving forward after escaping their toxic situations.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Hmmm, let’s see. My friends know I’m chill and I like simplicity and personal social interactions with my friends.
I’d most definitely have to take them to Jamaica Beach for some fun in the sun while we sit around, chat, and enjoy beach activities. That includes fishing on the beach. I’d pull out the grill and grill right there on the beach too.
For some night time fun, I’m taking them to Cidercade, or bike riding in the Heights, and for dining we’re hitting up the taco truck in front of Pub Zero.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to all individuals that are battling addiction, individuals that have dealt with abuse, and who are on a path of healing to better themselves. I want to credit my circle who have been tremendous in supporting my vision, and seeing the purpose behind the need to build Toxic Love Company. Shelly, Yvette, Jaq, Nadia, TR, Toni, Brandon, and Baron. You all are amazing.
