We had the good fortune of connecting with Kim Truong, L.Ac. and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kim, how does your business help the community?
To answer that question, I’d like to offer a primer on my background, to show where I have come from to get to where I am. There were other members in my family who were also medical herbalists, family members whom I greatly look up to. The culture of natural medicine was such an ingrained part of my upbringing and it was simply normal life to me. Whenever anyone in my family got sick, like with a cold or flu, we’d first apply tried and true home remedies and use food as medicine. It was about finding the most simplified therapy, which so often does the trick. I still recall sitting in the small herbal pharmacy as a little girl, helping out by weighing the prescribed medicinals and packaging them up for patients. There was something grounding and serene about working with natural plant products knowing that they would serve as medicine and help someone feel better. The aromas of those herbs still transport me to happy memories.
My childhood was all about living the natural life. Life was simple and moved at a much slower pace. It was about being outdoors, breathing in fresh open air, taking in a lot of sunshine. My home’s windows were kept open and that served as temperature control. It was the norm to have a bounty of fruits and vegetables directly grown from backyards straight to my family’s dining table. It’s a good example of truly living collaboratively with nature. Things were clean, easy, and joyful. And altogether it demonstrated how physical and mental health go hand in hand.
So it’s from those roots that I wish to bring to my own medicine and practice to share with everyone. I’ve seen the effects of living the natural life and I’ve seen the effects of modern city life and all of its stressors. It’s about creating the healthiest balance for our lifestyles.
Our human bodies are nature after all. Our health responds to the seasons, to the foods we consume, the air we breathe, the fluctuations of the days, and the pressures we are put under. Our health responds to the rhythm of our lives. It doesn’t get more natural than utilizing one’s own energetics to promote healing, which is what acupuncture does. As for herbal medicine, although they are mostly from food sources, when it is properly prescribed for your specific needs, it is as potent as any medicine in its curative effects.
My clinic echoes the idea of my family’s heritage in seeking simple remedies first, but now with the skills of a highly sophisticated and effective medical practice.
I am a licensed acupuncturist, in addition, certified in pediatric acupuncture. So I am trained in providing very gentle and comfortable care. A big part of the delight in treating children is seeing how easily and quickly they bounce back into good health. They not only recover faster but they end up so much happier too, and that is such a personal joy for me as well to see patients flourish.
I also have advanced training in neurological acupuncture. The reason why I like to focus on supporting neurological care is largely because our nervous system is like our communication pathways. It’s a part of how our bodies stay interconnected and functioning together. I’ve had much success with patients who otherwise were not given much hope for their conditions. What I always strive to do in my practice is to offer hope and progress.
Altogether, Eastern medicine is able to help improve practically any condition. I’ve helped many women with their gynecological care, and have had great results with such a wide variety of care- from treating insomnia, to anxiety and depression, digestive health, immune support, chronic pain and fatigue, as well as having wonderful results on cosmetic treatments as well. The goal is for patients to feel renewed.
So my message is basically welcoming a return to foundational health, using a medicine that our bodies can most easily process and adapt to. I want people to know that it is possible to simultaneously feel better, both physically and emotionally. I aim to contribute in keeping healthcare as effective and natural as possible. In a hustling and bustling city like Houston, I feel my practice offers the optimism of promoting a much healthier and genuinely thriving community.
I’ve also used my skillset to contribute to volunteer work. When Houston was hit hard by Harvey, I eagerly contributed in volunteering my services to anyone and everyone who came by and needed care. I enjoy including time for volunteer services and am often seeking suitable opportunities to do so. I’ve been lucky to receive much generosity in my life, and a community grows in heart when we all keep paying it forward. I still look for ways that I can use my abilities to support the city, all of its people and animals, and to do my best to aid in the well-being of all.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My medical practice aims to be holistic, to give consideration to the whole person. Each person’s life story is complex, but we all simply want to be happy and healthy. At the initial consultation, I ask about my patient’s health quite thoroughly- from the health history, to the lifestyle and habits, diet, and even the patient’s mood. Why? Because from my medical perspective, all aspects of our lives are interconnected to us. They all accumulate to make up who we are, and so it also affects our health. It gives me a 3-D picture of what the patient is facing beyond the symptoms they wish to address. That way, I can better get to the root cause of why and how their condition came to be, and so having a much more effective treatment that way. So I guess I could say that the feature of the clinic I am most proud of is that I listen to my patients and see them as whole and complete human beings.
So how does that make my clinic different? Patients feel a very customized care that suits their individualistic needs. It has to be so, because each person is ultimately unique and so is their health. Getting care that gives keen attention to that uniqueness is what makes the treatment especially effective. I am always excited to see how well a patient responds. It’s important to me that all my patients feel empowered and thrive.
The inspiration behind choosing my clinic name is that I wanted patients to realize that they are fully capable of a new start in life. Every day is a chance for renewal, to have a life that has vitality. The part that I easily enjoy the most is finding that fire return to my patients’ eyes. It’s such a thrilling thing to see for both them and myself. I want every single one of my patients to flourish and restore that spark of life and be their own personal best versions. It’s all possible.
Getting to where I am hasn’t always been easy. I’ve had to change locations more than once due to unforeseen circumstances. But I honestly wouldn’t change my past pathway at all. With each detour, I’ve come into generous new doors. I’ve met some wonderful people along the way- from friends, co-workers, to patients. The experiences and connections I’ve gained have been so valuable. There is something to learn from everybody and everything, and the point of learning is to become a better version of ourselves. So I certainly feel like I’ve benefited from every step I’ve taken, so it’s all been taken in stride, adaptability, and with enthusiasm. The past couple of years have been tough on so many without exclusion. But what I’ve learned through it all is that tough times feel easier when we are in it together, and it gives one a much deeper appreciation for all that is good in life. It’s with this tenacity and undying passion that I wish to share my medicine and continue to help people the best I can.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Anyone who knows Houston, knows that it is one of the most diverse cities there is. That’s a big part of its uniqueness and charm. What that means to locals is a wide array of choices on everything from dining to entertainment. One of my pleasures is indulging all my cravings at Katy Asiatown. There’s not only a great many varieties of Asian cuisine, but it also includes hobby and niche shops that you can spend all afternoon browsing. It’s such a great place to get gifts, or even quiet time just to browse books and indulge the inner child with charming trinkets and arts.
As for entertainment, I adore the Miller Outdoor Theater. There’s something so laid-back and inclusive about a lawn viewing of a concert with wine in hand. And their shows are always fantastic and top-notch performances.
And of course, there needs to be an appointment at my acupuncture clinic! Nothing is more relaxing and helps reset the body and mind better for any time.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutouts galore! First in line is my entire family, every single person. They all have always checked in on me and my well-being, looking after me unconditionally. That mutual love and support means everything. To have people in my life who happily share their bounty in life with me, and is also there to help me hold the umbrella when it rains- it’s priceless. A specific shoutout to my sister, Lemon, my confidante and golden girl best friend, who finds ways to make me laugh every single day, which is the best medicine. I also have a number of dear loved ones and friends whom I have relied on for opportunity, generosity, support, advice, mentoring, cheerleading, genuine care, open hearts and ears, and the much needed shoulders to lean on. They’ve opened doors for me, welcomed me into their homes, walked with me in the right directions. Joseph, Theresa, Ivan, Stephane, Jonathan, Corey, Lance, Joshua, Eric.
The strength I stand upon is thanks to all of them. I extend the deepest love and gratitude to all the kindness I have been so blessed to receive and happily give back.
