We had the good fortune of connecting with Spenser Crain and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Spenser, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind my professional success is the genuine connection I build with each of my clients. To be anyone’s therapist is a huge honor and I do not take my role or responsibility lightly. I guess it would help if I explain a bit more about what I do! I am a therapist and owner of my own therapy practice in Austin, Texas. I work with kids as young as 3, tweens, teens, parents and adults. Every person who walks into my office shows a great deal of courage and vulnerability just to come into an appointment and let a new person into their life. I love each of my clients and truly enjoy meeting them where they are and joining them on their journey. I think that people, especially kids can tell when you genuinely care for them. Every person deserves to be and feel seen, supported, and celebrated. Through the relationships I build with my clients, I think they are able to feel just that, and I believe that it why my practice is successful.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I own my own therapy practice (Bat City Counseling) in Austin, Texas. I work with kids, tweens, teens, parents, and adults. I often describe my client base as the wonderfully unique. I built my reputation and client base at a group practice, Austin Family Counseling. In this group setting I was able to learn the business ropes and increase my skills as a clinician from both senior therapists and other up and coming therapists. Different people gravitate to different business models, professional values, and have unique perspectives to learn from. I opened my practice in May of 2020, what many thought was a crazy time to launch a new business. It was intimidating and vulnerable to take the risk of starting new own business (during a pandemic nonetheless!), but I knew I was ready and could better serve my clients in my own space, thanks to the support and guidance I had received and the hard work I had put in.
What sets my practice apart from others is my diverse training and experience in the mental health field. In addition to my years as a therapist (in private practice and in schools), I have worked in a speech and occupational therapy clinic’s therapeutic preschool program, as a mentor in after school programs, in schools and in the community as behavioral support for individuals with ADHD and autism, and as a Special Olympics volunteer. These roles have given me a deeper insight into how one’s environment can impact their mental health and ability to self regulate/cope with stressors. I am better able to work with members of my clients’ support system on proactive and reactive support strategies because of my diverse background.
Just as different plants thrive in different environments, with varying amounts of sunlight, water, nurturing, people are able to thrive and feel their best when they are in the environment best suited to their unique strengths. I love supporting my clients and helping them build their feelings of belonging and significance in their worlds.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
(Can I skip this one? I don’t want to tell people where I like to go because I do not want to run into clients in my personal time. Also, it feels uncomfortable encouraging people to go out with our current covid rates. Thank you!!!!)
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have had a number of incredible role models and peers in the therapy world, and I am forever grateful to them and my family. They have all helped me learn and grow personally and professionally. When I was in high school my former elementary school counselor, Mrs. Stevens, reached out and asked me if I would be interested in mentoring some of her students who were having a hard time at home. I think that her support when I was young and again as a high schooler helped inspire me and put me on this path. So Shoutout to Nancy Stevens from Northwood Hills Elementary! Thank you!
