We had the good fortune of connecting with Brenda Perez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brenda, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Meeting or exceeding my customers expectations. I always try to go above and beyond for all my orders. Before I get started on an order I make sure to communicate ideas with the customer. Once I know what the customer wants, I begin sketching out my ideas and planning my days in order to not be on a time crunch. By preparing with time I’m able to finish orders with ease and really show off my skills. I do my best to believe in myself, and not be afraid to take on any challenges. I’m constantly learning things in order to improve Nikki’s Sweets.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Nikki’s Sweets is a home bakery I started, the thing I love most about my job is that it allows me to be creative in my work. I am most known for my vanilla sugar cookies decorated with Royal icing. I also make chocolate covered treats such as cake pops, strawberries, and breakable hearts. Being able to draw and paint characters or images onto my treats is something special, I think it is literally edible art. I love creating custom orders for my customers on their special occasions.

I think something a lot of people don’t know when it comes to making cookies is the amount of work is put in to baking and decorating cookies. It’s actually a long process with many steps from starting from scratch on your dough to mixing the icing to get the right consistency and colors, then letting the icing dry before you can package the cookies. You sure must have patience when you’re decorating anything.

Something I had to become familiar with was The Texas Cottage laws. I operate under those laws and am not allowed to ship, but I do offer pick-up and delivery. In addition to custom orders, I also try to attend markets when I’m available to.

I know I may not have a big following on social media as others do, but I think that by word-of-mouth people can discover my services and by posting pictures of my work they can see what Nikki’s Sweets has to offer.

In the future I would love to add different menu items one of them being macaroons.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well in addition to baked goods, I do love music, so any environment with live music would be a great place to be. Attending a concert of a favorite band would be fun, there are many venues in the Houston area. Another fun thing to do would be going to the museum district. We’d definitely have to visit The Museum of Fine Arts and maybe take a walk through the beautiful Japanese garden in Herman park. We could also grab some drinks and then cook our own dinner at the well known restaurant “Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ”.  I’d also plan a day at Lake Houston, to relax, enjoy the water and the scenery. There is so much to do in the Houston area! these are just a few of the things I enjoy.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
When I first started decorating cookies I admit they were not the best, but I tried and the next time they were a whole lot better. After I got the hang of it, my family members began supporting me in this new endeavor. This support gave me more opportunities to grow and improve my skills, and I’m thankful for that! Without that support I probably would not have gotten the push to start Nikki’s Sweets. I also want to give a special thanks to my mom and husband who are always there to help me!
