Meet Alex Arzú | Creator Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex Arzú and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alex, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I felt like my back was against the wall. I had a long history of being held back by the education system and the same in my corporate experiences. A lot of people think, “I was following my dreams”. The reality I was acting out of fear. I was in fear that no matter how hard I worked or even if I was talented, the economy could tank and I could be out of a job or maybe my employer wouldn’t allow me to move up because of xyz. So I trusted the work I put into myself.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think as I’ve looked backed on my journey. Every step of the way has been challenging but I’m okay with that. I feel like my personal practices are rigorous so I feel confident there. As far as business it has been a learning experience and still learning. I’m particular about how any business prospect handles working with real artists and not just a commission. My most challenging component has been getting the right people in place to support the business. In that, I’m learning how to be a better leader and things have been running a lot smoother. As a creator, I disconnect my perception or my thoughts of the medium. For example, “Is watercolor going to take me longer to learn than oil?” When I’m using a medium whether it be tattoos, digital art, spray can, 3D, pencil, pen, air brush, paint brush, sculpture, airbrush, charcoal, watercolor. When I first started, I didn’t hesitate to try any of them and had fun through learning about them. I see myself as a medium between these tools and ideas. Art is the expression.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Definitely get a cup of coffee at the Doshi House in 3rd ward Houston or The Tipping Point Downtown for vintage wear and coffee! Drive through East Downtown in 2nd ward to check out some street art. Graffiti Park is one of the most popular places to see street art. All of the Houston wards are close in proximity. Drive around and see the art. I pained a mural on a basketball court at Catherine Delce Park that is a must see. Definitely one of my most proud pieces. For lunch on a nice day Moon Tower in is a place where you can grab a cold beer and have a picnic style seating for a chat. There’s a lot of bars and restaurants near the stadiums close by and several different means of transportation from trains, bikes, to horse buggy’s to get around.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
