We had the good fortune of connecting with Tolu Roli Taiwo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tolu Roli, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I believe a common question business owners ask themselves when deciding what type of business to launch is “How can I meet a need?’ “What is something that we all needs but don’t have enough of?” In my case, there was not a thought process at the beginning. It was more of a “Just do it” type of thing. Now, we are at the “learn as you go stage.” Which honestly, I am enjoying. When I realized my business needed to meet a need in order to thrive, I did some research and a whole lot of praying. It took some time, but I was finally able to answer. 1. We all need Jesus and 2. Clothes are our everyday essentials. So bam! Jesus on a T-shirt! Just kidding. But hopefully you get the point.
What should our readers know about your business?
Roli’s Closet is a faith based, black owned small business that was started in May of 2020. Officialy, we sell T-shirts, Hoodies, Tank tops and sweat pants but recently we’ve been able to add a few things on the side such as custom gift baskets and other custom made items.
I think the main thing that sets Roli’s Closet apart from other small businesses is the fact that we do not just put ANYTHING out there. What I mean by that is, we make sure each t-shirt, sweatpants or hoodie can pass a message or as a form of encouragement for its buyer. One of my favorite products would be the items in the ‘Trust GOD and Keep it Moving’ line.
Getting to where I am now business-wise, was not easy. There were days were I felt like giving up. There were days I told myself there Is no need for this. But then there were also days I remembered my “why”. On those days, it was easier. On the days we got lots of orders, followers reposting our content, customers sending in selfies, it felt worth it. Yes, I know everyday will not be like that, but we do cherish the days that are. I am definitely very excited to see what becomes of Roli’s Closet if I continue being consistent.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Black Walnut Cafe for breakfast is a must! Everything on the menu is BOMB! (No I have not had each item, but from what I’ve had, I am sure the rest is amazing. After food, shopping at the Galleria and/or North Park would be ideal. I do not go out that much so I am not sure what else we would end up doing but I am sure google would help us figure out what to do for the remainder of their stay.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout will have to go to my Uncle Shola Taiwo. He was the one that gave me the idea and began ‘the push’. The idea was one thing but if not for that push, Roli’s Closet would not have been here today.
