We had the good fortune of connecting with Meredith Kirk and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Meredith, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
Persistence and consistency are huge assets when deciding to run your own business. Initially, the most significant challenges revolve around making connections in the industry and getting your name out there. At times it is exhausting, and it may even feel like you aren’t getting anywhere, but keep pushing! Meet with other vendors, attend a styled shoot, and don’t feel bad talking about your business with personal friends or posting online. Keep doing all of those things consistently, and things will start to happen for you! All of these things have been a huge part of growing my business, and are still activities I actively pursue!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My brand is inspired by the class & sophistication of old Hollywood cinema and the joy-filled love stories of my clients. When I think of the golden age of cinema, I think of the beautifully constructed narratives of classic films with sparks of elegant glamour and intimacy. I work with my clients to select a session location, timeless attire, and thoughtful, natural poses. It is important to me to craft all of my sessions around bringing my clients’ unique stories together with the timeless sophistication of the golden age. I want them to feel like movie stars!

Because of this, my primary medium of choice is film photography. Film holds a classic esthetic and uniquely captures a moment in ways that are hard to replicate on a digital camera. While I do shoot digitally at times, shooting film forces me to slow down and ensure I’m capturing authentic, intimate moments that are timeless to my clients.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Houston is such a great place; you can find something amazing in every corner of this ginormous city! Some staples for me would be: take a self defense class at Krav Maga Houston, see a performance by the Houston Ballet or visit one of the botanical gardens-if it isn’t 100+ degrees outside!

I am a huge coffee fan, so you can’t go wrong with Cavo coffee or the latest shop on my side of town – Bean and Bottle! There is also no shortage of incredible restaurants! My all-time favorite is Kata Robata but you really can’t go wrong with anything in city!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Honestly, that is a tricky question because I have been fortunate enough to have so many supportive people around me! If I had to narrow it down, I would say 1) my Dad and 2) my Fiancé.

My Dad owns multiple successful small businesses and is probably one of the most intelligent people I know. Watching him run his businesses, understanding his thought process, and seeing the decisions he makes, have had a significant impact on me. I always know that he will be there to answer my questions or give guidance in different facets of my business, and I’m so grateful for his knowledge and support.

Second is my Fiancé, Hunter! He is so incredibly supportive of all of my business efforts. If I’m feeling down, he is an encourager. He listens when I need an ear. He is patient with me when I am overwhelmed. When I have too much on my plate, he steps in to help. And when I need someone to remind me to slow down, he is right there with the words I need to hear. I am very grateful for his love & support, and I can’t wait to marry him!
