We had the good fortune of connecting with Madeleine Biscocho and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Madeleine, is there something you believe many others might not?
So many people in this industry think that the next step in “growth” for their beauty industry is going from becoming licensed, working for a popular med spa for “experience”, starting your own brand while renting a suite, and then the ultimate “end goal” is having a store-front. As I’ve experienced my time in this bountiful beauty industry, is that growth is not the same for everyone. I was fortunate enough to have had the chance to rent a room (literally was considered the “catch-all” room” in that office, as soon as I got licensed. I received guidance from the extremely goal-driven and experienced owner of Ololri Spa, Kristen Triplitt, and Beyond Beauty Esthetics was born. When I moved into a suite at Salons by JC in Sugar Land, my thought process wasn’t to set my business up in the swankiest building…. It was what, “would be the best commute for my lifestyle (being a mom of 3 little kiddos)?, and parking accessibility for existing and future clients. 4 years after my business grew into something I could never have imagined, I had so many people ask if my next move would be to open a store-front. But why?! The building managers of Salons by JC were amazing, and why wouldn’t I just move to another suite situation, but in a different loaction in Houston to be accessible to more clients? Again, growth is different for everyone… Never mind with the Keeping-up-with-the-Jones’ mentality! Think of your clients and your mental health as a business owner. These are the most important priorities for Beyond Beauty Esthetics because we’re here for the long-run.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As all stories begin, “Once upon a time…”. Hahaha! When I told my mom, who had an over 40 year successful career as a nurse that I was going to start my own esthetics practice, her literal words were, “don’t call me when you’re homeless.” If there are any Filipinos reading this, they woud be laughing so hard because most of their parents have already predetermined their medical career paths, and can relate to my story.
Regardless, I followed my calling, and even though the goal was not to win my mom’s approval, she now loves to brag about the “esthetician” in the family. My biggest obstacle was never other estheticians in Houston, but cultural expectations.
Beyond Beauty stands for more that just physical appearances…. It respresents mental, emotional, and physical health. I am so proud to be able to heal so many facets of the beautiful people who come into my treatment rooms. Something I tell all my clients is that beauty cannot be defined by a singular factor.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This has to be one of the hardest and easiest questions! I am foodie at heart, a creature of habit, an a homebody all the same time. I would take them for a facial at my favorite spa first, Beyond Beauty Esthetics, of course (excuse the bias), then a mani/pedi at Sweet Escape Nail Lounge in Sugar Land. I love to cook, so I would cook a home-cooked meal that evening.
For brunch, I would take them to another Broken Yolk because I love their crab cakes and shrimp and grits! Shop everywhere! lol, and then grab dinner at Rouxpour. I love a good movie night, so probably Studio Movie Grill or Star Cinmena.
Drinks are always great so Bar Louie is an awesome spot, and great ambiance for walking around afterwards.
Astros game, visiting family, and just spending quality time is perfect. This homebody is already exhausted! lol!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Mine and my family’s background has always been in the medical field. Nursing was always “in the stars for me”, as my mom specialized in it, but I knew I wanted to take a different route. My heart was forever on the path towards the beauty industry. I’ll never forget the moment I told my mom that I wanted to be a makeup artist and her words have been burned in my brain every since, “Ugghhh! You have no ambition at all!” Lol, I put my passion to the side and embarked on my inevitable nursing degree.
10 years later, I decided I would forge my own path and combine both passions. I trained with Becky Kuehn, LE and founder of Oncology Spa Solutions, Specialized Esthetician for 37 years. Just like Ms. Kuehn, I believed that treating people that are undergoing cancer treatment or have thrived throughout their journey, that I should help to be the one that can make a “forever modification” in their skincare treatments, for ever how long its been since they’ve had cancer. The rewards are endless: being the one who always cared for them as an individual and never just giving them a “one-size-fits-all” skincare treatment. Becky taught me taught me and numerous people that we have the special opportunity to care or someone when they need us most, and really make a difference in their lives.
Recently, I was feature in the May edition of Up Close Magazine for sponsoring Mely Cruz’s skincare journey through her breast cancer journey. Mely isn’t just a survivor, but a THRIVER because she had a strong team, like her family, Tiffany Sebastian (owner of Classic Chevrolet of Sugar Land, who set us up togther, btw), and her Pink Sisters along with her 54K followers on Instgram. There was only thriving in the cards for Mely, and I am humbled to have been part of her journey.
Oncology-focused esthetics has given my heart and mind a deeper appreciation for the resilience of skin and PEOPLE.
