We had the good fortune of connecting with Lindsey Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lindsey, is there something you believe many others might not?
“Fake it ’til you make it.” While I agree that we should approach things with a level of confidence, I highly disagree with the premise that you should pretend we know an answer if we do not.

Inauthenticity is one of the biggest obstacles to a healthy and functional business, especially with the rise of social media and its implications. Starting your own business is a huge undertaking: there will be mistakes and necessary changes to be made along the way. Every person has a beginning point; being transparent about this with clients, though it seems frowned upon, is the best possible approach. I believe it is better to be open and honest rather than to exaggerate numbers or answer questions incorrectly. Staying grounded in the beginning and learning from the failures or gaps in knowledge that come is more sustainable in the long run—it’s the only way to allow for an adaptable business that can evolve and grow.

Rather than faking it until we make it, I believe we should practice making it until we make it: find a mentor in the same field that can help with those questions, be able to convey how skills learned from previous trades makes you the best candidate for hire over someone with more experience, and always write down questions/mistakes/failures so we learn from them, rather than repeat them. Through this, over time, we will become more educated and find processes that are better for business, instead of just pretending to. We should always keep chasing knowledge, growth, opportunity, and clients with authenticity.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Before becoming a Realtor, I worked for a sorority headquarters building and managing sorority houses all over the continental United States. I loved what I did, however, I traveled and worked constantly. At the beginning of 2020, my husband and I decided we wanted to start a family, and I chose to leave my job and pursue a career in real estate. 5 days later I found out I was pregnant and then two months later the entire world shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was a very scary and uncertain time for our physical and financial health. I passed my license exams in May of 2020 and joined CB&A, Realtors who took a chance on a 6-month pregnant, Dallas-native. I had experience in real estate, but a small sphere of influence in Houston, and I am forever grateful that they did. I joined the Krom Group, under top producer Trevin Oberkrom and have learned and grown so much more than I ever thought possible.

Growing a business from scratch was not easy. Immediately I threw myself into church, organizations, volunteering and our local neighborhood HOA to meet people and develop honest friendships and create a referral network. I have tapped into networks with other agents outside of Houston, and taken advantage of leads the team I joined has provided me. You have to put in the time and effort to see the return, and knowing that every no will eventually lead to a yes. Once you have the yes, the work doesn’t stop there. I want every client to feel like they are my only client, from signing an agreement to well after closing, I am there guiding the client through.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Going to a brewery is always a must on the itinerary – St. Arnold, Karbach and Buffalo Bayou Brewing are a must. All three have a great patios and some incredible views of Houston. I have a two year old, so I always recommend the Houston Zoo in the morning (before it gets too hot) followed by a stroll around Hermann Park, and a short walk to Lucille’s for some great southern cuisine. Other favorite restaurants are Ambriza, Brenner’s on the Bayou for happy hour, The Breakfast Klub, and Cafe Zun Zun (in Cypress) for coffee!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
CB&A, Realtors, Chance Brown, Julie Shalloup and Trevin Oberkrom!
