We had the good fortune of connecting with Dalia Martinez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dalia, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I initially was in cosmetology school in High School, and I really loved being in that industry. As many of you know, COVID happened in 2020, and that delayed a lot of things including my testing to get my license for cosmetology. We had to do school online, and I felt like I had lost the motivation to even want to do anything in the beauty field. As time went by I was working at HEB, I couldn’t see myself working for anyone anymore. It was tiring, and stressful having to deal with people, and I just didn’t see myself doing that anymore. I already had my nail certificate since I got that when I was in school, and I was really debating on doing nails or something else. I really had my mind made up on nails, but the more I thought about it the less I wanted to do that. Then, one day I was talking to my boyfriend about it, and was asking him for some guidance on what to do, and he brought up eyelash extensions. I really was interested in lashes because of the fact that I always had my lashes done. Where I’m from there isn’t many eyelash techs, so I really wanted to do it not only for me, but also for the people in my town. I wanted them to have more options on where to go. Fast forward two weeks later I went to a lash class, and let me tell you once I was there I just knew that’s what I wanted to do. My instructor was very thorough on what we were doing, and she had so much patience with me. Once I got home all I did was practice, and even though it was hard it got me to where I am today!

What should our readers know about your business?
I personally feel like what sets me apart from others is my eyelashes. My eyelashes don’t look like anyone else’s. Everyone in my town does different work, and I feel like mine is more extra. My eyelashes are more fluffy, and more fuller. Becoming an eyelash tech was never easy. There’s always people downing you, and your business. You just have to keep pushing. When I first started doing lashes there were many people downing my working because I had just started, so obviously I wasn’t going to be the best, but I just kept pushing. I constantly practiced, and tried my best to get to where I am today. I’ve learned that in this industry it’s hard to find friends that do the same thing as you because not everyone wants to see you win. You have people in your own town not wanting to see you succeed, and it’s sad. But I’ve also learned that there’s great people who will always be there for you, and I thank my friends for that. The girls who I’ve met, and made friends with, I wouldn’t trade them for the world. I may still not be the best, but I sure do a good job at what I do. Doing lashes isn’t a job to me. I truly enjoy doing them, I love meeting new people. I want people who are looking into starting their new business to know, that it’ll never be easy, but it’ll all be worth it in the end! Never give up, and follow your dreams.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Honestly, there isn’t nothing to do in Bay City, so I would most definitely want to go to Houston to do something over there.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My boyfriend (Lorenzo) deserves all the credit. Without his help I wouldn’t be where I am. He’s the reason why I always pursue my dreams. He pushes me to be better, and to do what I love. He’s the reason why I do what I do, and I couldn’t be more thankful for him.
