We had the good fortune of connecting with Marie Bennett and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marie, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I’ve been into the arts and everything creative since I was a little girl, so modeling isn’t far fetched for me at all. I chose to pursue modeling because I realized I have such a passion for not just the modeling itself, but the creative process behind it. I love working together with the stylist, photographer, and makeup artist to come up with unique concepts that have never been seen before. It’s a very proud moment when I’m able to see these visions come to life and share them with others.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a model who’s worked independently and with an agency all while being a student, I’ve learned a lot. I’ve learned that my time is very important and that controlling my image is key to my success. No matter who I’m signed with, maintaining who I am is the only way I can reach my end goal. I’ve been in situations before where I feel like I lost control of who I was and the way I was being portrayed. In the end , I’m the only one that ended up suffering. A big thing that I took from that is that I don’t have to say yes to every offer, especially if it isn’t beneficial to me or my image. It’s imperative to be just as, if not more involved in your career and decisions as the people that are managing you.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Discovery Green is a must!! I’ve been going there since I was a small child and I always have so much fun. It’s such a nice spot in the middle of downtown with nice greenery and great restaurants. There’s always lots of events there too so it’s best to look online to see if there’s anything special going on. My favorite is during winter time when there’s ice skating.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would first love to shout out my parents. Their support as I’ve gone through this journey has been incredible!! They’ve always taught me that anything is possible and they’ve believed in me no matter what, and just having that parental support at such a young and vulnerable age is directly related to my confidence and success. I would also like to shout out Adraint Bereal (@adraintbereal on IG) for being such a great mentor to me. Adraint has always been very open and honest when it comes to advice. He’s an extremely talented artist, photographer, and author who I have immense respect for. I take all of his constructive criticism very seriously. Another photographer I would love to shout out is Cameron Reed (@camvisualart on IG). Cameron is a creative genius and each opportunity I’ve had to work with him is always such an honor. We’ve created some amazing work together and I definitely wouldn’t be where I’m at without him.
