We had the good fortune of connecting with A. Monet and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi A. Monet, why did you pursue a creative career?
From the young age of 8 years old, my passion for art has been consistent in my life. The creative process provided a unique escape for me, and although I initially pursued traditional art classes during my youth, I found them to be less challenging than I desired. Opting for a self-taught approach allowed me to push my boundaries and enhance my artistic skills.

In 2012, I took a significant leap of faith by deciding to showcase my artwork to the world. As an artist, I resonate with Erykah Badu’s sentiment of being ‘an artist and sensitive about my ssshhh,’ making the decision to share my creations a daunting one. However, this step was transformative for both my craft and personal growth. It led me to discover a supportive artistic community, creating a space where I could connect with like-minded individuals.

I truly believe that overcoming the fear of vulnerability and pursuing one’s passion is invaluable advice. The experience of putting my work out into the world not only opened doors for my art but also allowed me to find a community of fellow artists. I encourage anyone passionate about their art to push through their fears and chase their dreams—it’s a journey worth taking.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art? Oh, it’s like a carnival of characters dancing in a kaleidoscope! I’m all about weaving different personalities into one vibrant universe. I particularly love cartoon styles.  There’s this unspoken magic when details and hues collide, making spaces burst with life.  I’m an explorer—no medium or painting style is off-limits! The A. Monét brand is like a buffet—a flavor for every taste bud! It’s about embracing diversity in art, refusing to be confined to one style, and inviting everyone to join in this colorful adventure.

Although I have done murals and work around Houston, the proudest moment was selling that first piece, no doubt! It was nerve-wracking, like sending a piece of your soul into the world for judgment. But guess what? Someone saw the spark in my work and wanted it for their own. That opened doors to collaborations with fellow artists and invitations to festivals, showcases, and galas—talk about a whirlwind of excitement!

It’s been a wild ride of relentless practice and a big dose of resilience. Staying open to learning in a world that never stops evolving has been my secret sauce. Never, ever throw in the towel. Variety is the spice of an artist’s life—exploring different styles, mediums, and finishes keeps the creative juices flowing. Practice, practice, practice—they weren’t kidding with that one!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Welcome to H-Town!! First things first, secure that week until Monday—it’s all about the Sunday Funday vibe here. Start with Elements HTX at Cottonwood for the juiciest, most mouthwatering steaks imaginable.

Now, let’s indulge your senses—head over to Cactus Music, my favorite music-buying haven for vinyl records and all things old school. And when the musical magic leaves you thirsty, sip on some award-winning martinis at Davenports—trust me, they’re pure liquid gold.

For a dash of culture, swing by the Menil Collections to feast your eyes on art that’ll spark your imagination. Then, treat your taste buds to divine desserts at Crumbville—prepare for a flavor explosion!

But wait, the night’s still young! Head over to Sienna Wings for the best finger-licking wings money can buy. Bar 5015 is the spot for Friday or Saturday vibes—let loose and dance like nobody’s watching. And who could forget Pedro’s Tacos outside Sam’s Boat? They’re a slice of taco heaven, a must-try.

Finally, cap off the adventure with a Sunday Funday extravaganza at Urban Social, The Spot, or Chapman & Kirby—because what better way to bid adieu to an epic week than with more good times and unforgettable memories?

Houston’s calling and this itinerary is just the tip of the iceberg. Get ready for a week of pure, unadulterated fun!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Ah, where do I begin this expression of gratitude? Firstly, a shout-out to my mother, my forever cheerleader in my artistic career! Her unwavering support has been my palette of inspiration. Then there’s my grandpa, bless his heart, who insists my creative genius is a family heirloom—I owe him for the chuckles and the artistic genes, or so he claims!

Big love to my partner, the chief architect of my morale-boosting brigade! When my mind resembled a blank canvas, their nudges and encouragement painted vibrant strokes on my path. Expressions of gratitude to my friends who have shown up and showed out at any event/showcase I’m participating in. And how could I forget my art fam, my creative crew? They’ve been my comrades-in-arms, sparking fireworks of innovation and motivation with every conversation.

To every soul, big or small, who’s dipped their brush into the reservoir of my dreams, I sincerely thank you! Whether it’s a gentle nod of appreciation or a full-on parade of support, your contribution has colored my journey in ways beyond imagination. I truly appreciate you from the bottom of my heart.
