We had the good fortune of connecting with Adam And Savannah Stroder and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Adam And Savannah, how does your business help the community or world?
Adam and I (Savannah) saw so much waste in our community from new construction and the demolition of older wooden structures. We thought about how we could utilize these beautiful wooden pieces, and after obtaining a used saw and some hand-me-down hammer and nails, we took to our garage to start creating furniture, home decor, and games. We take so much joy in turning our community wood waste into something that can be treasured by the community for many years to come.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Adam started out wanting to do graphic design, and then ended up getting a degree that was geared towards physical therapy. I, Savannah, have a degree in Geology. Both of us have waited tables and bar tended throughout college. Savannah ended up working in the oil industry for 8 years, up until she was laid off during the Covid downturn. When A.S. Is Designs first started, we did many local markets, festivals, all while carrying around our then small daughter, Aura. We started selling online on ETSY, and after four years of hard work we started picking up more sales online, and now we are fully online. We also have a website and 3 employees who were jobless due to Covid. We even just moved out of our garage and into a new workshop that is actually fitted for woodworking. We are so thankful that all of the hard work is paying off. There is still a lot of work ahead, but we are so ready to take it head on and become an asset to our community.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We have so many favorites! For a fun night out, Olive Oil restaurant on a Friday night gives a GREAT Greek dinner and belly dance show! Then, Exit 73/Ranch Hill Saloon are super fun for dancing. Numbers and Avant Garden in Houston is a great night out as well! If a beer and chill is what they want, we always suggest our wonderful Southern Star Brewery or B-52 Brewery! For a great treat and coffee, Vernele’s Bayou Bakery is a go to stop for us. For a brunch, 105 Cafe is a delicious stop. We like to travel with our stomachs and then dance it off later. Any place with music, food, and fun is fine by us!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We have taken SO much inspiration from local businesses, and as it we know it takes a village to raise a child, and our business is like our child. Thank you so much to HTX Mercantile, Sweet Texas Treasures, Jayden Layne Boutique, Bits & Bobs, Vernele’s Bayou Bakery, Southern Star Brewery, and the many other amazing entrepreneurs and sweet small businesses in the area that have helped us learn and grow. We couldn’t have done it without your encouragement and awesome example.
