We had the good fortune of connecting with Adetiloye Oluwatosin Jekami and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Adetiloye Oluwatosin, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
It started out of rebelliousness. In Nigeria you are expected to get a job under an employer of labor after National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). But I wanted to explore my talents and do more than wake up every morning and go to work as an employee. I wanted to be able to make money and enjoy my independence which includes working at my own time and deciding my own income. That pushed me to start mine.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am very proud of affluent Nigerians who give opportunities to average Nigerians without influence or connections. I wouldn’t be where I am today if these angels of destiny didn’t lift me up and further believe in me. If not, the journey would have been tougher than it was. In the beginning, nobody wanted to work with a creative (art) writer, project manager, or content creator who is not popular. The ones who would are not confident enough to pay actual worth of the service being rendered. But today, I can say that I have been blessed by God with clients who see results and have become loyal to my brand. A lot of victory comes from believing in God and daring oneself not to worry. It’s hard but anyone who can just trust God without seeking explanation will go far. I am a creative (art) writer from Ikorodu Lagos in Nigeria who went from zero (not having connection with the Joneses) to mattering in significant settings and conversations.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I highly recommend Sweet Sensation fast food restaurants. For art enthusiasts, Thought Pyramid Art Centre Lagos & Abuja including Nike Art Gallery Ikate Lekki is the place to be.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mother has consistently been really supportive and understanding. As a single mother, she toiled the sun to raise me and my half-siblings alone from nothing to something. When the world is against me, she always has my back. Besides, it’s not easy being a self-employed Nigerian. Now add being a start up creative on top of that. Even though she would have preferred that I worked in the office in suit and tie. She still supported my desire to be a freelance social-enterpreneur. She is the best. My gratitude also goes to everyone who believed in me to the extent that they boldly refer me locally and internationally.
