We had the good fortune of connecting with Adriana Garcia and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Adriana, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
You will always have your ups and downs in the business world, yet it is up to us to make the best of the good and the bad. One thing I learned early on is to have a WHY. This is very important because any time you want to give up, you remember WHY. I have always been a very positive person, and I strive to do the best I can as a creator in photography. Since I was a young girl, my dream was to become a photographer, I would always have a disposable camera and take pictures of my friends and I. One of the main reasons I chase my dreams is because of my father, an immigrant who came to America so that his family could have a better life and make their dreams come true. My father passed away in 2010 from cancer. I remember the doctors telling my father he only had six months to live. However, that did not stop my father. He never gave up and lasted with us five beautiful years. So why should I give up on my dreams? Like my favorite Mexican painter said, “Feet, What do I need you for when I have wings to fly?”- Frida Kahlo
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Photography is like art. It tells a story like a painting. For example, Frida Kahlo’s paintings all have a meaning in her life, and photography stands the same. Photography is not just clicking the button and taking random images. Photography, to me, is freezing a special moment that you will remember for a lifetime. What makes my photography different from others is that my images are candid, and I feel the best photos I have taken are in the moment, where we can see genuine smiles and love. Not to say that I don’t do pose photography because, at the end of the day, I have to have results, but to me, the best photography will always be candid moments that could never be duplicated, like in a pose. However, I am proud of the stories I have created and captivated. I am also excited about all the knowledge I have gained throughout the years and adding it to my work.
At the beginning of my career, photography was hard to get into because most people thought it was just a camera. People fail to realize that there are so many unknown aspects of photography, the major one being the investment you make in equipment, software, computer hardware, classes, etc. Throughout my entire career, I have learned that there will be challenges, but if we can learn to focus our attention on the most critical aspects of our lives is the key to a successful self. My mission as a photographer is to be able to capture beautiful candid moments that will last a lifetime. I want people to look back 10 years later or more and remember those moments that have been a freeze in one image.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Houston is a very diverse city with so many places to see. Usually, when friends come and visit from out of town, I will start by taking them to my favorite panaderia called El bolillo bakery and getting some of their best delicious Mexican bread. Throughout the week, we will visit Space Center Houston, Downtown Aquarium, Houston Museum of Natural Science, Houston Zoo, Kemah, and underground tunnels downtown. For brunch, we would go to The Dirty South, located in Angleton, TX, and for dinner, a must-place that I will take my friends to is this place near Kuykendahl called El Norteno. It is a taco truck that offers the best tacos.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Some of my biggest supporters throughout my whole entire career have been my family and husband. They constantly share my post on social media, model for my portfolio, recommend people, and be there for any support that I need. My family has been one of the major reasons why I’ve been so successful. However, I want to dedicate this to my husband; he has always been there throughout my whole entire career. He is my personal photographer, my advisor, my assistant, my everything. I can honestly say he is the one who pushes me to be the best I can be. When you have someone that believes in you, that is everything. He is my person. “Surround yourself with only people who are going to lift you higher” -Oprah Winfrey
