We had the good fortune of connecting with Adriana Guerrero and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Adriana, how do you think about risk?
I believe that taking a risk is the best way to grow in many aspects of my life and in my career. If I’m not putting myself out there and willing to fail, I will never know if we have what it takes to succeed. It’s like the old saying goes,”without risk there is no reward”. I find when I’m nervous to try something, I lean into it…because it means that whatever it is, it is something I truly care about and to succeed would be the ultimate reward!!
When it comes to my career in hair, I have found success, but it only came when I risked everything.
Before I was a hair artist I was a college grad. 6 years into the corporate world managing business development and sales. I wore a suit, carried a laptop, and had two phones with me everywhere I went…that was my security.
But I wanted more, I wanted to be an artist, and I wanted to make people feel good about themselves. I’d always loved the beauty industry and hair was my dream since I was a child, I knew there was more to life than climbing the corporate ladder.
With support of my partner I began cosmetology school, going to classes after my day job, where I gained my cosmetology license. At this point I took the leap and started as a receptionist/ assistant at the salon, Kaleido Hair.
Although, I was taking a risk by completely starting my career from scratch- I knew it would be worth it if I just put my heart and mind to it.
My own passion and determination mixed with the support and patience of my mentor (Liz haven) and my boyfriend(Angel Ruiz) I was able to turn the risk in to reality!!
I’ve never felt so fulfilled now that I’m and doing my dream job…I believe risk=reward. Whether the reward is everything you wanted or it is a lesson, it’s always worth it! Without taking the risk of leaving my old lifestyle I don’t think I would be as successful and emotionally wealthy as I am in my new career as a hair artist.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Being an artist was my biggest dream as little 5 year old Adriana! It was my “dream job”, but I was always told by society that in order to be successful I must go to college and get a business job. So I did just that, and I was in the corporate world for many years-very unfulfilled and riddled with anxiety. Once I traded the security of a salary and stepped into my purpose everything felt right. When I am doing hair, I feel at peace and see every detail as a piece of me. Each guest that sits in my chair will have a unique experience which is catered to them. Hair is something that can make a person stand a little taller or feel a little more confident and that’s what I bring to my artistry love and empowerment.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh man!! First restaurant we are going to would be AKA sushi house…it’s my favorite, plus they have happy hour all day on Saturday and Sunday.
The next day I would like to start with a brunch at Tiny boxwoods and set out to shop for new plants at Thompson + Hanson and the flora culture!! These are my two current favorite nurseries.
Another one of my favorite dinner spots to take a friend would be Gloria’s for spicy margs and Latin food!
Heavenly lashes and nail spafor a relaxing pedicure. I also would love to take them to a spin class or two at CycleBar Houston heights!
I’m fairly chill and enjoy time with friends at home playing board games, card games, just unwinding and laughing with wine!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
