We had the good fortune of connecting with AJ Gulla and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi AJ, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
With no previous business experience I was very skeptical about starting my own business. It was a scary thought but I had a ton of support and endless resources to help out. I had no idea where this would lead but I knew that I wanted to bring people together. I wanted to create an environment where people can socialize and participate in friendly competition in a fun and exhilarating space. I strongly felt that axe throwing could be a great way for people to come together in a unique way. Male or female, tall or small, young or old, it doesn’t matter. All people are welcome to try and throw! Good vibes only though. We are her to provide a good time. That is why we started the Ratchet Hatchet.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Ratchet Hatchet is a unique space where people come together and enjoy throwing axes and hatchets. We are very proud of the experience people have in our facility. I feel that we provide great customer service and a great environment for people to come together and have a good time. Being a small locally owned business, we did have difficulty getting our name out to the public. Over time we found that if we provided a great experience for our customers, our brand would get out there and we could really show people what we are about.

Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
We would definitely suggest eating at a few of our great restaurants in Houston. We love Sticky’s chicken, Be More Pacific and all of our other locally owned restaurants. I would definitely take my guest to the amazing view at Eleanor Tinsley Park (depending on the heat of course). We have some great breweries here such as 8th Wonder and St. Arnold’s. I would also suggest grabbing some drinks or lounging in The Heights or Washington Ave. Houston is such an amazing city full of different cultures. The possibilities are endless.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
To all our family and friends who supported us, we thank you all so much. You know who you are! Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. We would also like to thank all our customers who came and had a good time throwing with us. Thank you.
