We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex Wang and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alex, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
When I started out in real estate, it was tough finding balance because I was simultaneously obsessed with trying to become an adept real estate agent as well as put food on the table. I jumped face first into the industry while living off my savings because I did not want to go into a new career half-heartedly or “part-time”, as a lot of other agents have done in our industry.
What should our readers know about your business?
I am a real estate agent in Houston, TX. I got into this business after hearing 3 different people in my life telling me that they think I’d do well in the business. Upon shadowing my first broker, I realized that this job was something that could potentially use every vocational skill I’ve been blessed with without feeling bored! I think what sets me apart is that I am a strong negotiator and I’ve learned from some of the best. Honestly, helping clients find what they want is easy. Most of the time they already know what they want. Negotiating and representing effectively to *obtain* what my clients want is where a lot of the my strengths lay. In an activity where leverage is king, negotiations is what sets apart a good agent from a mediocre agent. The truth of the matter is that it takes less than a thousand dollars to obtain your real estate license and start helping people make the biggest decisions of their lives. Very few agents will have spent the time that I have to develop the skills that I have; let alone have a strong career background in marketing consulting.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love the city of Houston and there are endless activities to do in this city! Basketball games at the Toyota Center, Baseball at Minute Maid Park, and football at NRG Stadium are all easily accessible from livable spaces in the city. I also really fine dining and local businesses. Georgia James Steak House is one of my favorite restaurants in town, owned by our hometown hero, James Beard Award-winning chef Chris Shepherd. Chinatown has a lot of amazing food at various price points, and there are plenty of bars and breweries with various vibes in atmospheres in Midtown, The Heights, Uptown, Downtown. In short, I’d say most of a trip to Houston will be food related.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My first big shoutout is to my mother, Lichiu, who pushed me to keep trying when I was at the point of quitting being a realtor. She’s also in the real estate industry as a mortgage underwriter in Michigan and still talks shop with me to this day. Also a special shoutout to my mentor, who is also named Alex Wang. He’s a big-time real estate agent out in Palo Alto/Silicon Valley, who has spent time developing a lot of my fundamental values in how I operate with my clients. Third big shoutout to my bosses Ashli Garcia and Michael Silva, for inspiring me and impacting me before even having met me. I never thought that I would have anything to do with Happen Houston, but here I am.
