We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexus Rendon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexus, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
When it comes to taking risks, I believe it is unavoidable in life. Every choice and decision we make on a day to day basis have a degree of risk to them, and oftentimes than not, the bigger the risk the bigger the payoff. I took a risk by leaving my steady job as an Art framer to focus on forging my own path in art. I took an even bigger risk by doing so as a single mother. For me, taking risks have been fundamental in shaping my life into what it is now.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My artistic style has evolved with me over the years. My focus however has always been subjects involving nature, human form, and a focus on an interesting color pallet to enhance the mood of each piece. Creating art full time was always the dream of mine since I was a child. I always knew what I wanted to do, the road to getting to where I’m at now however was full of trials and setbacks. There were moments along my journey where I went years without creating art, so it is forever an humbling experience to be able to make art everyday now.
The lessons I’ve learned along the way have changed me fundamentally as a creator, and forever as a person.
Perhaps the most impactful lesson I’ve learned along the way is that of being okay with starting over.
You have to be okay with letting go of whatever is not working out for you, both literally and figuratively. I’ve found with this philosophy in the back of my mind, some of my favorite pieces I’ve created were pieces I started over on multiple times!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friends asked me to give them a taste of Houston life, I’d tell them to plan for the week because there’s a lot to get into!
I’d plan a week mixed with outdoor and indoor activities. We’d have to check out our scenic parks like the Arboretum and Buffalo bayou during the week days. Of course making plenty of time to check out a variety of the amazing restaurants Houston has. We’d have to take our time in Bellaire and Chinatown for some Korean bbq and sushi though!
We’d check out the weekend events that Levy park and Discovery green always have going on. I’d take them to the Montrose and Obscure oddities markets, and we’d close the evening with some bar hopping in Montrose or heights. I’d have to stop and show them all of the arts districts in the city, as well as give them a tour of the many artists studios we have. And we wouldn’t miss any photo ops checking out the hundreds of murals we have around the city!
(We’d have to sneak out of the city and to Katy though to view my Largest mural to date at Doneraki’s fuego y Mar! )
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to those who have been gracious enough to lend their knowledge to me in the past, to my loved friends and family who have been supportive and encouraging towards me in this lifetime, and to my brilliant son, who never fails to motivate me day to day.
