We had the good fortune of connecting with Alicia Kominek and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alicia, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
This is the most common question when we start something new. Personally, this is the way I solve this problem: First I ask myself what would make me happy. If it is time to let go I embrace it. If it’s time to endure I remain strong and go all the way.
I believe it’s the right moment for everything in life and either solution will open a new door full of opportunities.
It’s always a time for a change or for perseverance but we will never be wrong if we follow our hearts.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m Tai chi Instructor, Graphic Designer, and Photographer. I currently work in these 3 areas regularly.

In my search for a low-impact exercise, I discovered Tai Chi. I soon realized that regular practice improved my memory, flexibility, coordination, balance, and concentration. Tai Chi enhances my energy levels and promotes my relaxation and good rest.

3 years ago I start to develop nerve problems in my arms than my legs. The medicine makes my mind fogy and memory loss. It was hard to continue practice but I didn’t give up. Then I realize how in the practice the pain went away, my mind was in sync with my breathing technique and I was in an internal balance that brings me wellness.
The daily practice helps me so much to keep my mobility and focus my mind out of the pain. That was the reason I started learning Qigong for more precise health-beneficial movements and vital Energy Flow. Both disciplines complement each other perfectly giving me balance, flexibility, concentration, and inner peace.

I began learning Tai Chi in 2018 in the Woodlands Tai Chi group. It was an exhilarating journey, and I reached higher levels under my Master and mentor, Sesco Saegusa, teachings. I continue practicing with this group and have the honor to teach them and assist the class.

I become an instructor to share with others what has been good for my health. My mission is to teach the benefits of Tai chi and Qigong in a class where everyone can learn at their own pace and feel happy with their learning progress.
I created a step-by-step guided class to show how disconnecting to the outer world and reconnecting with your inner being will provide harmony to your life through continuous practice.

In the process, I have learned to be perseverant, confident, and strong but at the same time remain humble to keep learning and happy to enjoy life.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in The Woodlands and love everything about my city, especially the amenities. I will take them to Market Street for a coffee and sit in the green arena for a chilling evening, and live music. At night I will take them to the Waterway for a nice walk and beautiful night lights. For dinner and cocktails, I will take them to TGI Friday or Chili’s.
Ride in a trolley and waterway boat. Visit Glade Gallery. Attend one of the many free events in The Woodlands.
For the Texas food experience, I will take them to Master pit Bar-B-Que the best barbecue in town.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
A lot of people inspired my life, starting with my mom, she taught me to be honest, perseverant, and overall a happy person. My daughters were always the engine in my heart to keep going; now my grandchildren are the motivation to grow and leave them a legacy to follow. My husband, my life companion, always supports me in every step.

In Tai Chi, my Master and mentor Sifu Sesco Saegusa, he teaches me with his patience and wisdom makes me understand my ability, and encourages me to succeed.

In my growing journey, I started learning Qigong and I discovered Master Vivien Chao. I truly admire her performance and teachings.
