We had the good fortune of connecting with Alicia Sly and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alicia, what’s the most important think you’ve done for your children?
I’ am a mother of three boys. . My sons range in age from 11-16. My oldest son Dominic is very hands on with the family business. You will often find him working our booth along side his father at our local farmers markets. I decided to incorporate all of our children into the family business. They each have roles to play and they understand the importance of being responsible for a task. I believe it is important to show your children responsibility and discipline. We are constantly showing them what it takes to run a small business as well as the successes and failures.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the Chef/Owner of Alicia’s Sweet Obsession. We are a small virtual bakery that specializes in designer desserts. What sets us apart from some other bakeries is that we really do use only the best ingredients . I started this journey making desserts in a high end restaurant and I did not skimp on the quality of ingredients when I opened up my business. We still source only the best European chocolates for all of our desserts. I am truly proud of the fact that I have made it this far. I did not begin my culinary career in baking so I was constantly having to prove that I could do both savory and sweet foods. It was not an easy transition at all. There were a lot of obstacles and some really hard times but I refused to give in or give up. Those trying times really molded me as a person. I truly believe that I have been able to grow to where I am today because of the foodie community. The food bloggers and social media influencers have been so helpful in spreading the word about my brand. I will forever be thankful to them. I have learned many lessons but the most valuable lesson is to not take anything personal in business. I would like everyone to know that if they truly want to be a business owner they should do it now. The decision to focus on my business was one of the best decisions ever made . I now get to wake up every morning and do what I truly love. I would like the world to know that I am just scratching the surface of my potential. I have so much more planned for my business and my brand.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am absolutely a foodie at heart so I would have to take them to Brass Tacks, Commonbond , CorkScrew BBQ , Tris, Steak 48, The Turkey Leg Hut , Discovery Green, The Galleria , The Houston Zoo , and a tour of my favorite Farmers Markets ( Buy Local, Houston Heights, Tomball Farmers Markets and Urban Harvest farmers market ). The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate this shoutout to My mentor Chef Dax for allowing me the freedom to create my first Cookie Plate in his restaurant over 5 years ago. He told me then that the cookie recipes created there would take me far and they have. Thank you. I would also like to thank my support system of family, loved ones an friends for keeping me going through all of the highs and lows of owning a small business. Thank you all.
