We had the good fortune of connecting with Alyssa Harkoo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alyssa, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The idea behind this business is simple. We wanted to share in people’s celebrations, create something beautiful and set the stage for lasting memories.
When the pandemic hit, it seemed as though most people lost control over a lot, including myself. There was so much darkness and sadness in the world and I felt hopeless and helpless. I really tried to tap in to controlling the things I can. It seemed as though there wasn’t any good news in the world anymore, but then I thought “oh yes there is.” If the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that life is fragile. Most of the time, the little things are the big things and are the moments we look back on and smile. So to me, a child turning one is good News,
graduation is good news, an anniversary is good news. There is good all around us and it deserves to be celebrated. Yard cards help that celebration and brings attention to these key, beautiful moments. I had to be a part of it, that’s how Good News Signs was born!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Good News Signs is currently a two person show. Me(Alyssa), a Pharmacist turned homemaker and my husband Mark, a jack of all trades- Engineer, farmer, nature lover and now professional Yard Card Creator.
Some may think yard card isn’t art. Anyone can stick signs into the ground, and that’s true, anyone can. However, if you get into it, you would realize that it requires creative finesse. Color coordination, placement, size logistics are just a few things to consider.
Here at GNS, we strive to make beautiful displays. We spend a lot of time into ensuring our inventory is unique and outstanding. We take pride in putting our brand next to our display because we know the effort it took and the passion we poured into executing it.
Mark is extremely meticulous about placement, and I am extremely meticulous about inventory. What sets us apart is the dedication we put into our brand and product. We want your experience with us to be amazing, from customer service, to ease of ordering and especially the product you receive. We put our heart into each and every request.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Here is the thing we are simple folks! I would take them to the places that we go to over and over. Tin roof for BBQ, Nara Thai for some delicious Thai food, The Pho to get that Vietnamese fix, Lake Houston Brewery for a fun and relaxing time and we definitely would be stopping by La Michocana for their pre-marinated meat to make the best homemade tacos! I love when we have visitors because this is our go to list and I must say no one has ever been disappointed with the food line up!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my wonderful husband, Mark. Without him, Good News Signs would not exist. His support is unmatched. He is truly an amazing human who is both professional and creative. He took the idea I had in my head and turned it into a reality! Mark I am very grateful for you and I appreciate all of your hard work!
