We had the good fortune of connecting with Amanda Holstien and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amanda, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My business, Mary Annael & Co., has formed and evolved naturally from my spiritual path. From the first time I was given a deck of tarot cards, people have lined up to have me read for them. Eventually, my business has evolved beyond tarot readings to making spiritual supplies. I began making magical anointing oils and holy waters for myself and had an overflow. As an experiment, I began selling my spiritual products at a botanica in Marfa, TX, and they were an instant success. I am continually adding new products, all of which are ritually made and initially created for personal use. My spiritual godmother, Mama Eve, also guides me in the evolution of my business, including her suggestion of my selling “fixed” candles, which are magickally charged, and this has proven to be a fruitful endeavor.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I have always walked an unconventional path. Although I have a BA in philosophy from Columbia University, after graduation, I left my high-paying job in New York City to pursue a spiritual calling. For years before I began Mary Annael & Co., I needed to grow and evolve spiritually. Over the next 7 years, I developed a meditation and yoga practice and became initiated into a few spiritual traditions in addition to undergoing magickal training. Only after developing these core skills was I able to launch Mary Annael & Co., which provides spiritual and magickal products that are carefully, ritually prepared. Because of my proper training, I also provide spiritual services for clients, including tarot readings, home/business cleansing and spell work.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Currently, I live in Marfa, TX, which is a much slower life than Houston. Everyday we’d try coffee from a different spot: Frama, the Sentinel, Do Your Thing or my new favorite, Big Sandy. My favorite spot for breakfast is Aster, so we’d go there too. For lunch, one day we’d go to the Water Stop and another day we’d go to Line Thai in Alpine. Another day, e’d take a trip to Marathon for breakfast or dinner at the Gage Hotel. If it’s summertime, we’d go to Balmorhea for a swim. We’d also spend a day hiking the Davis Mountains. Of course, we’d make a trip down to Terlingua and Big Bend for a few days. In the evening, we’d go to the Marfa Lights Viewing area and see if we find any aliens.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to thank my spiritual godmother, Mama Eve for her support and inspiration in guiding me to “think big” and grow my business Mary Annael & Co.
