We had the good fortune of connecting with Amanda Martin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amanda, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I guess you could say fairness & freedom…..Initially when I broke out on my own it all happened so quickly, I’d love to say I had an extensive business plan, but I didn’t, I just knew that in order to build a strong business platform to bring my vision into full fruition meant I had to do something that scared the hell out of me. I wanted to create a judgement free workspace with like-minded, goal driven agents who could think outside the box and collaborate no matter how different our personalities or backgrounds may be. The quote “you are who you surround yourself with” speaks volumes in this business and although at times I feel like I have no clue what I’m doing, the one thing I do know is I’m forever grateful for my amazing team because my success is nothing without their support, they are the fierce but powerful attributes to the all-around stability & growth of AM Real Estate Group. If you’re not on a team pushing you to be the best you can be, you should probably take a seat at another table, my brazing beauties are my backbone who continually inspire me to be better because ultimately, they chose me as their leader and there is no greater compliment which played a huge factor in my decision to go independent. I’ve always been that crazy friend rooting for the underdog, daring you to be different oftentimes in early years not holding myself in the same power but remembering when one kind word of encouragement from family, friends or even a stranger pushed me to keep going. I love lifting others up, helping them find their light to be the confident bada$$ ‘ they naturally are, achieving their goals is all attainable with the right mindset. Since starting my company I’ve definitely experienced the “trial & error phase”, but that’s all a part of the process and I’m excited to guide others through the growing pains of this business as they all find their own niche of empowerment, and for that I feel so incredibly blessed to live my life with purpose.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
AM Real Estate Group was established February 2022, we’re located south of Houston in the booming metropolis of Danbury, Texas…..Just kidding, don’t blink because you’ll definitely miss it, ha!….but don’t call us a one horse, the other four might get offended!
Originally from Alvin, Tx my husband and I moved to Danbury 17 years ago which is around the same time I became a licensed realtor. After taking a few years off I made my comeback in 2019 but if someone would have told me where I’d be right now in this present moment, I would have never believed you. (I actually just giggled because I still don’t believe it) Not because I doubted myself but because even, I just didn’t take myself that serious. After working for a local brokerage for 2.5 years flying solo as an independent agent, I started a team last summer, but after rapid growth I knew I needed to make some changes and that’s when AM Real Estate Group was born. My loyal clientele keeps me motivated and are the moving parts behind my success it’s because of them that I keep broadening my horizons and learning new things. I’ve experienced some of my greatest accomplishments in business the last two years, one being starting a team, opening my brokerage, beginning a new chapter on the commercial side of real estate, taking on a few multimillion-dollar listings and most recently closing the biggest deal of my career. I’m beyond excited to see where commercial real estate takes me. Blessed is an understatement, it’s like I’m living a Cinderella business story and it’s everything my 8-year-old dreams were made of except I didn’t win the lottery oh and actually had to work, but it’s gratifying to know all the hard work, blood, sweat & tears I put in this business to get here (don’t forget scars, I fell down a freshly waxed flight of stairs once so I promise I praised the lord extra for that save) in the words of Snoop Dogg “I’d like to thank me” lol and God for always having my back. All jokes aside I love what I do, I will never claim to the best in the business, but I’m real, clearly not smartest, but I’m kinda funny, I still struggle at times, because I’m human and my success’ may fall short to another’s but I’m not in competition with anyone but my 8-year-old self (still working on that hot pink lambo, see below)
My brand…
I’d describe myself as having a “passionate personality” high energy, never met a stranger, always ready for fun, love a good laugh, tell it like it is (passionately, lol), living on sarcasm and coffee (pretty sure caffeine is my blood type) mixed with a cuss word or two (okay, maybe three) but my work ethic along with my compassion & empathy for others has always been one of my strengths. Most people look at me funny when I tell them that the law of attraction is REAL, but I knew that when choosing how I would market myself needed to represent me. As for my branding success, I don’t stick to one particular style because I’m always evolving, but my logo has a pretty significant meaning to me and represents spreading my wings, it’s an indescribable, yet liberating feeling when you finally figure out who you are and what you want in life and know that it’s never too late to reinvent yourself. Your character, legacy & purpose are the key ingredients for a solid foundation of who you are as a brand. I wake up early every day, get dressed up whether I’m working from home or not, others take notice of the way you treat and carry yourself, you set the bar & tone of your success. Houston and the surrounding suburbs have been labeled one of the most culturally diverse cities in America so being emotionally intelligent plays a huge role in being able to relate, empathize and understand different personalities in all aspects of life but especially in my line of work. Real estate is ever changing, completely different from when I first got my license16 years ago, it takes heart to understand your clients’ needs and hustle to meet their demands in this rollercoaster of a market as well as boldness to stay relevant with today’s trends if you want your brand to make a lasting impression. I was once told I was perceived as arrogant, when I think back on that statement and the hurt, I felt, (much like a sucker punch to the gut). It took a minute to process, but I finally understand it was just one person’s opinion of me and at the end of the day I’ve realized that when you exude self-confidence it can be mistaken as arrogance in the eyes of unworthy suitors or those who may just be projecting a war of insecurities within themselves. I’ve also learned the best cure for others’ negativity is the ability to show grace & understanding because no one truly knows the battles you’ve fought in order to be the person you are today. We live in a world where people will scrutinize your every move for no reason, so when branding yourself find something that resonates with you and go with it.
If you would have asked me to define success when I was a kid, I would have told you about a huge white mansion with a hot pink Lamborghini parked out front, majestic unicorns running amuck while me and my dolphins were swimming out back in my olympic size pool…. Ha even 8 yr old me was a dreamer!!
But since giving adulting a whirl the past 23 years, defining success at the age of 41 feels more like 20 years of marriage, pushing through the difficulties when we felt like giving up, memories made with our two kids, celebrating their achievements (big & small), creating a happy-dysfunctional, healthy home (it’s possible), never letting them doubt how much they are loved or valued. One day they’ll leave the nest and transition into adulthood, I pray they look back with gratitude and understanding knowing that they actually taught me more about life than I could have ever taught them, so I hope I made them proud. There is no secret sauce for success everyone has a different definition that can only come from within, my life changed the moment I made peace with myself, choose forgiveness, kept doing what’s best for me, let go of all self-doubt & fear, never forgetting where I came from, who helped me get there or why I started this journey. The beautiful thing about life is you get what you give, so I try to always be my best version with a grateful and humble heart. I do find success in knowing that I’m currently living the life I once prayed for except my unicorn has been replaced with a majestic mini donkey named Lucy who loves me without condition, and could care less what I do for work as long as I bring her food, brush her hair and tell her I love her more than Bud (our dog)…… That’s pretty awesome.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Maybe hit up an Astros game, visit the truckyard, wonder bar, the museum district really Houston is full of tourist activities Fine dining and shopping at the Galleria I recently revisited Truluck’s and it was still amazing. If they wanted fun in the sun, we could explore Galveston hang out at the beach, pleasure pier or check out the strand. You can get some pretty Gulf views in Kemah and Freeport, but I feel Galveston has the most to offer.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband, Chuck for supporting my crazy ideas and wearing many hats as my sign guy, drone guy, emotional support guy all while running two other companies. I love you.
