We had the good fortune of connecting with Amarji King and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amarji, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
Seeing people fully express themselves has been my biggest source of happiness recently. I try my very best as a DJ to create a space where people are able to unapologetically be themselves. I feel very blessed to be a DJ that creates safe spaces for people to be as bold as they want and dance as crazy as they want.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I spin Funk, House, and Vogue/Ballroom music and most importantly dance like a crazy person. I use music as a medium to create safe spaces for people who don’t fit into “normal” parties. I like to think I’ve created a reputation of inclusion and thats what I’m most proud of as a Dj! I pride myself on creating spaces for LGBTQIA+ individuals to be safe enough to express themselves, and I accomplish this inclusion by freeing myself on the dance floor every night. If Amarji King is spinning the tracks for the night then you know any and every cool girl, boy, and in between will be in attendance and will be dancing their ass off. I started DJing in my bedroom and realized none of the parties I went t0 had made any attempt to make me, women, or queer people feel included so I had to change that. I feel blessed that people see the work that I do and continue to invite me out to create magical nights with them.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If you’re a creative you have to go to Sanman Studios or Theory Studios, they always host events on the weekends and all the coolest people come out! If your hungry you gotta go to Post Houston cause not only will you get good food but you’ll get such cute instagram photos! Lastly if you want to dance (which you should) you have to come to Buffalo Bayou Park since the best vogue sessions in the city are right there every Sunday!!!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shoutout to my underground ballroom/vogue community, and my co-producers Brandon Chan and Joshua Rodriguez. Thank you for all yall do to inspire and create!
