We had the good fortune of connecting with Amaru The Musical Nomad and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amaru, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I pursued music simply because it is what I do best effortlessly. It all started around the age of 4 and the passion never left. The sheer joy of singing and playing instruments unlocked a perpetual happiness. Of course it’s not a perfect journey but definitely a fulfilling one.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a lover of music in its purest form. Since my love is so deep, I have developed a spiritual connection which is emitted whenever I perform. I’m most proud of my resilience and tough skin.
I am where I am today due to excessive practicing, passion and years of experience. It was definitely not easy but worth it. There were moments where I was homeless in college and unsure of how I would finish, but I pushed through.
That grind mentality that I learned at THE Prairie View A&M University has followed me since i’ve graduated to where I now teach the youth of third ward, music production.
I want the world to know that there is more in store as I continue to navigate this musical landscape as an up and coming independent d.i.y artist.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Food- I’d recommend Sunshine Vegan, Mo better brews, and Govindas for the healthy community, Abu Omar for the semi healthy community and Kulture if you want fine dining and Reggae Hut for those who just want some good caribbean food.
I am not an “outside” person so to speak, however I can name some cool places to find music.
Axelrad
Bad Kitty
Mo better Brews
Echoes
Wonky Power
The Gumbo Jam
Fresh Oranges
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate this shoutout to Dr. James Browden (first band director), Willie Smith (hs band director), Professor George Edwards (rest well) and the entire Prairie View A&M University music department professors. These people were influential in pivotal moments of me being a Musician from 5th grade, High school, College and up to now. Without this group of individuals, I would’ve probably settled being an athlete.
