We had the good fortune of connecting with Amber Mallett and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amber, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
The single most important decision we made was to simply take the leap.

It is easy to plan and prepare, to take a back seat until your business idea is perfect, you’ve done all the research, and you’ve purchased all of the tools imaginable to make your business run like a well-oiled machine, but what you’re actually doing is procrastinating. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to take that leap.

When we were deciding to start Mia Williow Boutique, we were scared. We had $6000 in cash, an idea, a rough business plan, and no idea how to navigate the industry. We kept thinking “What if we fail?” What actually happens if we take the leap and we fail? Well, we will be right where we started with no boutique but plenty of lessons learned. Failing, often multiple times, is how people succeed. Success is rarely linear.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
We are three sisters who own an online women’s clothing boutique.

Mia Willow is an online women’s clothing boutique with collections in sizes small-3X. Our mission is more than just stylish clothing; it’s about empowering women, body positivity, and quality clothing for all sizes. We believe so deeply in this mission that we promise we will never photoshop our bodies. Our boutique is for ALL women.

Our journey is still in process! We are continuing to improve on our mission each year. I’m proud to say that we source sustainable, affordable pieces in inclusive sizes. We believe strongly in advocating for all women and have some partnerships in the works with two charitable women-focused organizations.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
All three of us would say to visit the Museum district! Stay at Hotel Zaza and visit all of the museums you can! The Houston Museum of Natural Science has events, including cocktail parties. We are particularly fond of the Halloween-themed event.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We’ve had several inspirations and mentors throughout our journey. Our Mother, who passed, inspired our boutique’s name and provided us with the courage to start. Our Father, who is an entrepreneur at heart, taught us that it is ok to fail at a business- just try again with the new knowledge you now have. We could not have succeeded without the support of family and friends or the mentorship found within the Boutique Hub. Most of all, our success is the result of the amazing women who shop with us!
