We had the good fortune of connecting with Amber and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amber, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
I think taking risk plays a huge role in the entrepreneurial journey. It’s something that is present in our day to day life and decision making. As an entrepreneur we are not guaranteed a certain salary or monthly income. So literally every decision, must be calculated and must make sense. I’ve taken many risks on my journey and I’ve failed many times but I’ve also learned from my set backs and use them to refine my strategy. You know the saying “A setback is nothing but a set up for a comeback!”
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’d love to say my entrepreneurial journey has been on a steady incline but that would be far from the truth. I opened my shop at the end of 2021 and it was everything I dreamed of and more! Things were flourishing, business began to pick up, and there was so much potential. I was literally living in my dream.
And let’s talk more about taking risks! I opened my shop in the midst of the pandemic. Many would say that it wasn’t the wisest decision but I saw opportunity for growth.
However, long story short, I made the decision to close the doors at the end of 2022. It was heartbreaking to come to that conclusion. I felt like I was caught in a whirlwind, losing myself in trying to manage day to day operations and rental expenses; every 30 days quickly felt like every 15 days. On top of that, personal daily living was also a challenge. When unfortunate disturbances occurred, it was the ultimate and final blow.
I’ve most definitely learned a lot and gained valuable insights along the way.
There are 3 crucial things every business should know before opening. 1.) As we all know, location is key, but it’s also very important that you get to know who your neighbors are. I fell so much in love with the space, I didn’t care about anything else and that was my first mistake. 2.) Ensure all legalities are in place prior to opening to the public and finally, 3.) Build a solid support network! Surround yourself with mentors, advisors and peers who can offer guidance and support!
During this down time I’ve focused on connecting with family and friends; healing, regrouping and developing new strategies.
Now I’m thrilled to announce that we are refocused, realigned and The Suite Events is back!!! We are back and better than ever. Now as a premiere party rental company you’ve yet to discover! Get ready to experience the finest in rentals!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For starters, I’m a mom of two incredible kids, so managing their schedule already keeps me on go. I’m the friend who prefers to just go with the flow – no pressures, no time restraints, no itinerary. Houston has so much to offer that I find it hard to decide on where to eat because the options are endless. The city’s rich culture and the diverse cuisine is really impressive. That said, if we are picking out a few must-visit spots, I’d suggest starting with a relaxing visit to the spa to set a positive tone. There is a place in Cypress I have been eager to visit called Escape Spa. After that, lunch at Bungalow, a very lively restaurant that serves a variety of dishes and dinner at Lombardi’s, a posh Italian restaurant. To top it all off, a stay at my favorite hotel in Houston, Marquis Marriott would be perfect. I’m wherever the drinks are sexy and vibes are chic.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am deeply grateful for the many people in my life, but one person who stands out is my grandfather. He has been a profound inspiration to me. For over 30 years, he has successfully run a business in Corpus Christi, relying solely on referrals and word of mouth rather than promotions or advertising. This is particularly impressive in today’s digital age. He has taught me that character and integrity are crucial for success. I often compare my grandfather to an Ox. He embodies resilience and steadfastness. He is patient and honest though also quite stubborn. Despite facing numerous challenges, he remains unwavering in his principles, love for his family, and faith. Since day one of my entrepreneurial journey his constant encouragement and support have been invaluable as I pursue many of my own ventures. In fact, he played a significant role in helping me open Vanity Storm and The Suite Events in 2021. So this Shoutout goes to Pop Pop!
