We had the good fortune of connecting with Amy Baez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amy, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
After spending a decade in the corporate industry and experiencing the 2008 market crash, I was ready to pursue a more creative and innovative path. Drawing from my design, marketing, and merchandising background, I established a business focusing on residential interior design.
Amy Baez Interiors was established in 2009 as a woman-owned interior design studio in League City, TX, with residential projects across the Bay Area Houston. I developed a unique approach to design, drawing inspiration from my client’s life stories and applying design principles that bring their personal expression to life.
What should our readers know about your business?
I run a boutique, interior design studio where I can work closely with clients to understand their specific needs and preferences. By focusing on only a few clients at a time, I can provide a more personalized design experience, resulting in a final product that truly reflects the client’s style and personality.
In early 2009, I was laid off from my corporate job in Austin, TX. I saw this as an opportunity to start my own business. Initially, I experienced success in terms of making money. However, due to the rapid economic growth in Austin, I took on too many jobs and became overwhelmed. I was overworked and exhausted because I hadn’t established sustainable systems in my business.
Fast forward to 2017, my husband came to me with an amazing job opportunity in Houston, where I have family. I saw this as a chance to start fresh and restructure my business. During our move, I sold my furniture inventory, developed new systems, and took a much-needed break. Although I had experience in high-end luxury homes and builders, I lacked a business background. I utilized this time to reorganize and restructure my business from the inside out.
I am grateful for the opportunity to start from scratch and be specific about the clients and locations I wanted to work with when I rebranded. It took time, but my commitment drove my competence and confidence.
One of the most significant lessons I’ve learned along the way is the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. I’ve established a physical boundary between my work and personal life by creating a dedicated home office. This space helps me mentally separate work from relaxation and family time.
After 15 years as the owner of a small business, I firmly believe that design can solve challenges, identify opportunities, and pave the way for the easiest solution. Good design should clearly show its purpose and intention. Along the way, I’ve been honored with several awards for Amy Baez Interiors. The key is “The Design with Intention Experience”. I have created a stress-free and efficient design process that transforms the way people live in their homes, allowing them to enjoy it for many years to come.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Fall is hands down my favorite season! I love the crisp, cooler air and the beautiful colors of the changing leaves. The season feels even more special with the excitement of fall festivals and the approach of Halloween, Dia de los Muertos, and Thanksgiving—it’s such a festive time of year.
At this stage in my life, I truly embrace “me” time. If I had a day all to myself, I’d kick it off with a cozy fall brunch at Water Oak Café in Webster. I’d definitely order something sweet and savory, with a touch of pumpkin spice, of course! The café is a charming local spot that’s both laid-back and refined, making it perfect for a casual outing or even a client meeting. After brunch, I’d indulge in some pampering at the spa with a mani/pedi, maybe a massage, and a glass of champagne to really unwind. Once I’m fully relaxed, I’d pick up my husband, Eddie, and we’d enjoy a nice evening of al fresco dining at the Kemah Boardwalk—it’s the perfect way to end a fall day!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I owe so much to my husband, Eddie, for his unconditional support and encouragement throughout my journey. From the early days of building my business to the challenges of restructuring it during our move from Austin to Houston, he’s always been by my side, pushing me to keep going and reminding me of my potential. I also want to recognize my family’s constant belief in me. Their support has been invaluable as I’ve pursued my passion for interior design. Lastly, I’d like to give credit to the amazing clients I’ve worked with over the years. Their trust in me and their openness to my ideas have allowed me to grow as a designer and continually evolve my business.
